help identifing a browning a5?
I just purchased what i thought was a browning a-5, however i cant really find any info on exactly what i bought. underneath the receiver it says fn and below that 6 digit # 302*** . On the barrel it says acier special -12 it also has a strange looking vented choke attached. Any help with model, year and price would be greatly appreciated.

.
AFAIK, the SN co-relates to 1950, that's a Standard Grade gun which looks like it's had a Cutts Compensator , recoil pad, and checkering added. IMHO, it's a $250 shooter. All "FN" & "Browning" A-5's were made in the FN plant in Herstal, Belgium up until Browning moved production to Miroku Gun Co, Japan, in 1976 (IIRC). "Acier" = "steel", which stamping "Special Steel" is an advertisment for quality. . Last edited by PetahW; February 28, 2013 at 10:44 PM. |

Some Browning A5's were made by Reminton for Bowning during WWII, around 850,000 if I remember right. Then production went back to FN in Belgium.

The A-5 pattern shotguns made by Remington & stamped with the Browning logo during WWII while the FN plant was occupied by German forces, were Remington Model 11's with letter-prefixed SN's.
They are referred to as "American Brownings"; the 12ga's had SN's ranging from B5000 to B43129. ( 20ga's had a "B" prefix, 16ga's an "A") The OP's A-5 reportedly has a 6-digit SN w/o a letter prefix. . |
