580 mini-14 stock query
Hello:
I tried to swap out my tactical stock for a standard stock on my 580-series Ruger mini-14 today and it didn't want to fit - almost did but not quite. Do the new mini-14s require a special stock to fit (i.e. any pre-2005 stock won't do)?? Does anyone know of a good source for Ruger factory mini-14 stocks (plastic)? Everyone seems to be out at present. Thanks JCB |

I bought two minis a few years ago. A standard walmart model that had a nice wood stock, and a "tactical" model with the black plastic one. I swapped the stocks no problem. I haven't owned a pre-580 mini, so I couldn't tell you if the earlier furniture fits.
Wood stock on the Tac model is, imo, the best looking and shooting. Good luck!

You will need a newer stock for a drop in fit. You might be able to get away with modifying a pre 580 series stock to fit a 580 rifle but I'm not positive and I can't remember off hand what else was changed in the rifle other than the barrel profile. Try e-bay for a newer stock, you might be able to find a take off on there.

Isn't the new barrel contoured differently (thicker) on the newer ones?

Yes the heavier barrel profile started in the 580 series. Some 580 series rifles were built with left over lightweight barrels though all the 581 and up rifles have the heavier barrel profile.

Yes the first 3 digits of the serial number is the series #. In example mine is a 581 series, so the serial is 581-732XX.

Have you tried eBay or the local gun classifieds? Plenty of people out there swap stocks and sell their factory units.
