Bipod for AR15 - Harris versus Mako
I am trying to decide between these:
Harris with LaRue mount: http://www.laruetactical.com/harris-...lt130-qd-mount + a LaRue Vertical foregrip Mako T-Pod Gen2: http://www.themakogroup.com/product_p/t-podg2qr.htm I compete occassionally in our club 'Practical Rifle' competitions. They are a mix of short and long range targets in shoot-move-shoot format. I am thinking that the Harris bipod would be slower to deploy and maybe a heavier solution overall on my already heavy Ruger SR-556. Everyone seems to love their Harris bipods, though, and they seem well-constructed. Mako seems to have pretty cool and thoughful designs, though. I have no experience with either. Looking for ideas and opinions. |

First off....I have some mako stuff, the grip panels for FF tubes are GREAT and inexpensive. Most of there ar-15 grips are well made and designed for the price as well.
That being said, the mako bi-pod looks like a disaster. looks like it takes cues from (in my opinion) the worst FVG/bipod made...the "grip-pod". I've tried several, and the Harris is all I use now. I've had most of the models but have developed fondness of the BRM-S. I bought one, and soon after replaced one of my HBLMs with another. Both with micro pod locks. The height is perfect for me. Sitting at a shooting bench, prone....sitting with it on a log, pack or boulder. I've never handled/used that Mako bipod, but they don't even look to be in the same class as the Harris. The Harris is a little heavy, especially with the extra QD mount an pod-loc. The atlas bipod is much lower drag than the kinda bulky harris....but cost mucho mas denario --- BRM-S on the Mod O And the other one on the ML. Last edited by BerdanSS; March 10, 2013 at 08:24 PM. |

Don't like bipods on light rifles. If I had to have one of those two, I'd go with the mono-grip/bipod combo.

I agree with gary on that. As you can see, both pictures I posted are not "run 'n gun" rifles/carbines. That Mod O weighs almost 13 #s . I usually just find something "in area" to quickly take longer shots from with my carbine. Fallen tree, rock, car door or flip off my ruck-sack and shoot off of it.

I have a few Harris Bipods and they have functioned well. They do what they're supposed to do, they haven't broken, stayed on tight, and I've been pretty tough on them....and they still worked like a charm.

Thanks for the pointer on the Atlas. I like!
Take money out of the equation and there is still the time factor. Seems like a traditional bipod is going to take 1-2 seconds longer to deploy and the Mako would be almost instant. Are there any tricks to fast deployment of a traditional bipod? |

I'm willing to bet that with all the practice I've had, I can deploy a Harris, get on target and fire just as fast as someone with that mako...I do a one handed, single motion sweep to deploy the legs on mine.
Anything that you get you'll become fast with if you just Drill..... Drill.... Drill......... |

Good point BerdanSS.
Actually, looking at the Atlas, It would probably be slow due to the latches on the pivot point of the legs. |

I forgot about Atlas bipods. My buddy had one and it looked quite nice.
