Problem loading 870 Express HD

I have an 870 Express HD with about 350 rounds through it so far. It has had a fairly consistent problem since I bought it. I assumed it was user error but am beginning to think it could be a problem with the gun.

It has the 6+1 factory extension. About half the time, the sixth round will fail to slide into place. I would think it could be slight variations in shell length but it is consistent between ammo manufacturers and it feels like something is locked up as the sixth shell will not go in even a fraction of an inch.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Carl

Same length shells every time?
6+1 means 5+1 for 3 inch shells.

These are all 2 3/4 inch shells. If I unload them all and load them again, they will usually go in just fine. When it fails to load, I can't get the fifth round to budge even a little to get the sixth in. It feels like something is blocking it.

I have the same problem! I figured it was probably the spring binding up, but like you, I just take them all out and re-load, it works.

Is it possible to put on a different mag tube extension such as the one from Vang Systems? Since it's the last shell that is sticking, I tend to think the problem is in the extensions somewhere.

I also have the factory 2 shot extension. I also get hang-ups every once and a while. Its kinda scary considering sometimes my 870 is my primary home defense gun. Dont know how to permanantly fix it other to just unload and reload.

my friend had this problem where the mag tub on the gun, not the extension was bent so it was slightly oval. The last shell/spring would get stuck.

You should not have to unload and reload. that is not practical, ESPECIALLY with a "home defense" tool. I would take the extension off and take out the spring, inspect the inside of the mag tube (it should be smoothe as hell) and check your spring. A replacement Wolff spring wouldn't be a bad idea. Do NOT oil the spring or the inside of the tube (unless you're polishing, which probably isn't necessary). Just my .02

The factory mag tube has the indented ring for the mag clamp screw. The spring is probably hanging up on it.

Are you using the factory plastic follower? If you are ****can it and get a Wilson Combat follower.

http://www.wilsoncombat.com/sa_springs_followers.asp

The factory follower will tilt and get hung up on the junction between the extension and mag tube.

I just cleaned my 870 and replaced the follower with a scattergun tech one. I'll have to see if it still happens.

I agree with greyeyezz. I have 3 recent production 870s and all have aftermarket followers with -0- problems
