Options to Vepr 7.62.54r - Something modern?
I was considering purchasing a Vepr 7.62.54r, but at a cost of $800 or more I'm not sure it's worth while.
Does anyone have suggestions for a more modern rifle with compatible power and more widely available round? |

Anything in .308/7.62x51 will be ballistically very similar.
There is a WIDE range of .308 options with a wide range of prices. Several VEPRS are or at least used to be in .308. If you are looking magazine fed semi auto around that price range take a look at the PTR 91. It is a very good clone of the HK91. Mags are still super cheap and available. Course if you want to drop more money you have DSA FALs, the awesome M1A, AR10 rifles etc. if your kids aren't likely to really get anything out of college anyway there is the SCAR 17.

You could have a Romanian PSL for that price.

I would get a PTR while magazines are relatively cheap, or maybe an FAL. Something with similar accuracy that will shoot the cheap steel cased ammo in .308

Yikes, the Vepr's have gone up a bit in price since the last time I checked. With that said, I still really like them and would be tempted to pick one up if I were in the market.

I use my ptr for deer hunting. Only complaint would be the weight of the rifle. At the range it eats up whatever .308 ammo I feed it.

I'm not a fan of this kind of rifles as far as concern combat purposes..they are too long and heavy for cqc and not as accurate as many "marksman rifles" at long distances.anyway it is so cool looking. I'd take it as a fun gun to go to the range or hunting in relatively short distances..personally i'd take a good bolt action or an ar in 308..
just my opinion, Simone. |

I've been looking at 308 type semi-auto rifles suitable for hunting a bit and I think the AR10 types are probably the best. The more traditional hunting rifles don't have an edge in weight or price and likely aren't anymore accurate.
