Fiocchi Ammo Design
I recently purchased a 50 round box of fiocchi extrema XTP 9mm 124gr JHP ammo. upon inspecting the cartridges i realized that they are approximately 1mm shorter in length than all the other 9mm ammo i have. Does anyone know anything about this or if it will cause any problems. I was under impression that 9mm were supposed to be 29mm in length. Are there tolerances i am unaware of? it seems this could cause loading probs?

I have fired a couple of boxes of it through a Glock 34, HK P30, and a CZ-75 SP-1. I did not have any failure to feeds. Matter of fact my accuracy was a little better with it, than the normal Winchester white box at the range. They had a blowout price online and I bought 20 boxes. I am not sorry about the decision. I may buy a 1000 rounds if I can get the same price.

I have shot around 200 + rounds of the very same ammo and have not had a single problem.

The max overall length is 1.169" which is about 29.7mm. It can be as short as is safe for the powder loaded and will function in your pistol.
The Hornady reloading manual shows loads with a cartridge overall length of as little as 1.050" or 26.7mm.

FWIW, Fiocchi .380 FMJ has a shorter OAL than most other .380 FMJ ammo I've bought and has a less connical, more rounded bullet that works A LOT better in my PPK.

I really like the Fiocchi Extrema line of ammo. Hornady XTP Bullets, and it looks like they use Starline Brass. I use it in .380 and 9mm and it has always been totally reliable, and it's half the price of most defense ammo.

i've noticed that that fiocchi's come much cleaner than other brands such as winchester, remington, and american eagle. I wonder if that is any indicator to the quality of fiocchis bullets?

XTP bullets are shorter in height/length...
from the base to the flat (meplat) of the HP opening.
This will give a shorter OAL for the cartridge. THe CASE must meet SAAMI spec or there will be poor head-spacing. THE fiocchi is a reliable line of ammo, wish thye madr the 140 gr .357 XTP in the .38Spl load. (non +P) for that shoots to POA in my J & K frames. |
