NO, NO, NO, they are all different. The 338 Lapua magnum, can be fire formed to a 338 Edge, "AKA" Ackley Impoved. This is confususing at best, please do your research before buying, shooting.
Be safe.

Confusing, it was a tough word. There are too many wildcat rounds out today, it is confusing.
Just research.

All the ones you mentioned can/do shoot the same bullet but the case is radically different one to the other and thus the barrels are chambered differently. The nomenclature can be a bit confusing for a beginner. Look at all the 22 cal variants, 221 Fireball, 222 Rem, 223, 224 Winchester, 220 Swift, 22-250 ... and more. They all shoot the same bullet .224 diameter but the cases are different sizes to hold more or less powder.

Like milo said, do some research before you take the leap. BWT, any 338 packs a whollop on both ends.

Flashole, is that also true of the small-case .338, the .338 Federal? (I think that's the round, anyway.)

Flashhole, I disagree. I cannot discern any recoil difference in my 338-06 with the 30-06 it used to be. In fact, it doesn't kick any worse than my 7mmRM with 160s.

Brian - yes, the 338 Federal has the same diameter bullet as the 338 Lapua just different case sizes for more or less powder. Clearly the less powder capacity the less recoil for the same size bullet. I think GeauxTide has a good compromise for power and handling with the 338-06. Now watch all the guys who have big boomer 338s throw stones at me.

Do you have access to a reloading manual, the cartridges are listed in families according to bullet diameter.

No, the 338 Edge is a 300 RUM formed to 338 (it's a tick larger than the commercial 338 RUM).

Maps,
You are right, I guess I should have done some RESEARCH before I opened my pie hole.
Thanks

here's an example of some 22 cal cartridges

22 Hornet, 218 Bee, 221 Fireball, 222 Rem, 223 Rem, 222 Rem Mag, 22-250, all shoot a 22 caliber bullet (.224" dia) but the cases are different sizes allowing different amounts of powder, all carry a unique name.

Wups, my bad - I wasn't clear. Is the .338 Federal as hard on the shoulder as the older/hotter .338 rounds, WinMag and RUM? Or does the smaller case, even with the same 250grain bullet, produce a discernable reduction in recoil?

My error, yes, they all shoot .224" bullets. Don't know where my brain was.

No, the small 338 Federal will not have as much felt recoil as a larger magnum class cartridge.

Wolfeye, thank you. Based on the data at that sight, I will forgo building a Derringer in .338 Federal for some time, until better grips are developed.

Reading further down that column, if someone gives me a .338-.378 for a gift, I will sell it, or trade it for a pogo stick. A pogo stick would be nicer.

Brian,

don't forget that those are recoils in hunting rifles. In 20 lbs target set-ups the recoil becomes very manageable. Unless you plan to drag that 338 to the arctic to shoot polar bears at half a mile, just add 10 lbs of lead to the stock.
