Dont have a 270 Mine is a 7mm-08 in ss 15'' shoot 139gr.use it for deer/hogs
its sweet I have a 2.5-8power scope with shootin sticks its no problem at 200yrds. on deer. hogs at 100 are fun. I would say the 270 will have a good little snap to it but after you shoot some to get used to it you''ll love it the 270 has aways been a game getter good luck |

I have the SMith and Wesson .500
However i regret getting the 4 inch. Hindsight being 20/20 I wish would have gone with the big 8 inch and put a scope on top and used it for hunting. Now i have 4 inch rocket that I won't hunt with and only shoot 2 or 3 rounds before giving it up and icing the wrist..

I wondered about recoil /muzzle blast from those 500's
I also have 454 casull 71/2'' barrel muzzle blast is bad. and if the scope isnt on recoil aint good either. It is a great huntin round have no complaints on preformance. |

Well i can't comment on the big 8 inch and aboves, but the little 4 inch has HUGE blast and HUGE recoil. Not very fun. and since I can't/won't hunt with it, it only get used to explode a watermelon every so often. Definitely an attention grabber, but most people are afraid to try er out, which is fine by me, last thing i want is some jobber getting his forgead stamped. Having now written (typed) about it, I am even more sad i didnt go with the full size and add a scope and put it to REAL use. However i will carry it as a sidearm if (when) i ever go bear, mountain hunting.

FWIW I'd think you would do better with an Encore hangun in .260, 7mm-08 or .308. I love the .270 but it belongs in a rifle barrel of at least 22". The case just holds too much extra power and it gets wasted, short action cartridges are more efficent in short barrels. If you really want a .270 caliber then look to the 6.8 Rem in an Encore pistol, I think the performance from it might surprise you.

+1 Taylorce
A 260 or a 6.5 JDJ will get you 2400fps with 120s in 15".
Recoil and blast will be much less than the 270. |

In the mail.
Mr white tail uses a 30-06 encore pistol. On a TV show I once seen it seem to work fine. I shot a REM xp 100 in 7mm08 once.I think that was it I remember it was a bolt gun. And I hit the coke can at 100 yards with it. Don't remember recoil being bad.May need to get a muzzle brake.I don't know if Mr white tail had one on his pistol?

I never said that a .270 wouldn't work in a pistol barrel, it will work just fine. The thing is it will not produce any faster velocities than any of the other cartridges I suggested. You need a longer barrel to burn all the powder that a .270 cartridge can hold. Where as a .308 based cartridge hold around 10+ grains less of powder and will produce the the same velocities out of a short barrel as an 06 based cartridge. If you want the .270 get it but just don't expect it to perform like a .270 out of a short barrel.

.270 in a short barrel will result in lots of boom without great velocity. It just isn't an efficient enough cartridge. You would be better off picking one of the short-action based calibers. The resultatant velocity won't be any better with the short-action but it will be much more pleasant to shoot.
I love my 16" .260. |

My BIL has one of those Weatherby bolt action handguns in a 7-08. It's real accurate with a Burris 2-7 scope on it. He's taken several pigs and deer in the 150 yd range. But it can be a real handful with some of the more premium federal and hornady loads. I can't imagine the muzzle blast from a short barrel 270.

after shooting it.
Shot it through the sky screen. Three shots in the high twenty six hundreds, hit everything I pointed at from fifty yards. Sure was fun with a fifteen inch barrel, the recoil was not as bad as I had thought it would be. I used hand loads with 130 gr Hornady S.S.T on top of IMR 4831. sure look forward to getting a scope and hunting with it.

Sounds good! I've never hunted with a .270 Encore, but have taken whitetail with one in .243 Win. Still need to blood my .308!
How 'bout some pics of the new setup?

Taylorce1 is exactly correct about using a .270 win in a 15" barrel encore. You'd be better off with a .260 rem or a 7mm-08, as these efficient cases will burn powder better. I have a friend with a .30-06 15" barrel, and he is getting the same velocity as my .308 win 15" barrel, with more muzzle blast.

sounds like he already bought the .270 model, so it don't o to much good to say what he would be better off with now. Just a thought
