What do you carry?
I went hunting for the first time this year. My friend shot a nice elk and when it was all said and done, we were carrying the meat off the mountain by flashlight. We have a fair number of cougar and black bear around here and I found myself wishing I had a sidearm. So my question is "what kind and caliber of sidearm do you carry?" It can be a bit cold and wet and I'm also curious about how you carry? Thanks.

if you're in bear and big cat country i wouldn't carry anything less than a .44 mag. in an holster slung across my chest for quick access.
or if you're in a state that has to have a handgun concealed at all times i'de carry it with a shoulder rig under my left arm.

Some states don't allow sidearm carry while hunting. Make sure your's isn't one of them.

A .357 magnum, either a security six in stainless or a model 28 Smith in blue of course. A .357 is plenty for critters around here. I think about hunting with one, but the ranges are a little too far, so it's pretty much an around camp deal.

I've already got enough to carry when I'm hunting.
I leave the handguns at home. If I run into a situation that can't be handled with a 30-06 and a knife, you can just beam me up Scotty. |

A 4 5/8" Ruger 45 or a 4" Smith 44, either in a Threepersons type belt holster, strong side. Can carry either all day long and forget it's there.

I'm in Oregon and we're good for carrying sidearms during hunting season. I've been to several gun shops in the area and the responses have been all over the board...from knives to .22's and .380 stuffed in the back pocket to "anything but a .45". It also seems to be the logistics of bringing a weapon to the ready as much as the caliber (I'm pretty sure stuffing something in my back pocket isn't the thing to do...). I've gleened alot of info off of this forum and thought I'd toss it out. I had a blast on the hunt and plan on many more hunts. I just want to be a little more prepared... and in better shape!

Contender with a 14" 357 max barrel. Of course that is also my primary so maybe it doesn't count.

Glock G20 in a Bianchi military flap holster for the M9. G20 fits perfectly in that holster. There are many accessories available for that system allowing you to to carry it any way you want.

I do not always carry a sidearm when hunting but when I do, I carry a S&W 686 .357.
I'm in Kentucky so no bigger critters I worry about but having a hand gun for the coup de grace is a nice option to have.

I carry a Ruger .44 mag loaded with .44 specials, if I am huntin' horseback, which I usually am. A .22 Single Six, if I am on foot. Either will be holstered on my right hip.

I carry a Glock 21 concealed and usually carry it when I go duck hunting.
When I deer hunted, I would generally carry a Smith & Wesson Military and Police with a 4 inch barrell.

I have almost always carried a handgun when hunting anything. Different ones at different times. Ruger Single Six 22 LR, Colt SAA 44 Spl, Ruger Blackhawk 44 Mag. Mostly belt carry strong side, though when hunting cats in the winter used a shoulder holster to keep it dry. Snow falling in/on an open carry often locked up the gun with ice. Since we most often hunted right after a fresh snow the brush was covered and a holster full of snow was sure to happen if it was open. On cat hunts we seldom carried anything but a handgun, so it better work when needed. Used dogs so if there was shooting to be done it was at close range. Couple of times the stupid cat would not tree, now if you want to get your adrenalin pumpin, wade into a cat and dog fight and end it with a handgun without killing a dog. Sometimes using the gun as a club was a better bet than shooting.

I'll go along with E. Keith and say just about any 4" DA or 4 3/4" SA, .357 on up is the way to go. Maybe a semi in .45acp or 10mm. Mostly personal preference and choosing the right bullet/load.

When big game hunting in the Rocky Mountains I have always carried a S&W
.357 mag ( model 28 in 6" )....in an outside the waist band...typical western holster with a security strap over the hammer to keep the gun in the holster if I fell. If I didn't have the model 28 / I'd probably carry an L frame model 686 in 6". Once in a while, when I knew I was in fairly heavily populated Grizzly country / I'd carry a S&W model 29 6" .44 mag..../ same rig (since its an N frame like the model 28 ). -------------- Fly fishing in the same areas....I always carried the same gun in a shoulder rig - to keep it up out of the water when I was wading in a lake or river... |
