crazy question
What happens when you lose electricity (I note I can read and write into my logs --heck, even make ammo-- by candlelight)?

I have most of the load data I keep on my targets as well as my reloading log. Makes it easy to keep track over time. I have found there are no absolutes in reloading so I don't feel comfortable with a load until I've had 3 or more range sessions to see if results stay the same and the load is truly a keeper.
These are just random targets to show what they look like. |

Wogpotter : nobody is saying who's and or what way is best or sucks . Just what I and they do and why . This thread is to let the OP see many ways of keeping logs and why each of us do it the way we do . They can make up there own mind what will work for them .

I don't record nearly as much as others have mentioned so far. But then, my loading is pretty limited for now and is more about fun (hot) loads and plinking rounds than accuracy. Everything just get scribbled in a notebook.
I am a software developer though, and I've been stewing over some ideas for a reloader's assistant program. I hope to start actual work on it whenever I have free time again; hopefully this summer. |

As for load records, I occasionally copy mine onto a flash drive. And I print a couple hard copies every time I fill up a full page of data.

2. What happens if you have a fire in you house and your notebook burns up? Years of data is gone... That is why I believe in storing my data in multiple places. I keep a three ring binder for each of my calibers, as well as electronic copies (both locally and in the cloud). Most web hosting solutions have an option for automatic backup...

1: you have a reloading emergency, so vital that you have to "load by candlelight" during a power outage. 2: You're sufficiently desperate that you'll work with powder next to lit candles. 3: you were clever enough to have printed out your records so you can see them in the flickering candlelight while freezing because there's no power for heat either. EverReady invented this wonderful little gadget way back in 1956! The more observant may notice the lack of an A/C cord while the unit is powered & the presense of a spare battery or two. Quote:

I just like to think it's possible to progress beyond the fist axe & clubbing females to drag them into your cave by the hair without a buttload of criticism when you're answering a question.

I believe you can't have too much information on your reloads. All of my records have been in note books and binders. I record even when I'm not loading. Lately I have been recording .224 cal. bullet specs. from as many manufacturers as I can find. And with the economy the way it is for me I even record price and source. In doing this recording I have found that your manufacturers use model numbers to ID bullets and it is handy for my 22 Hornet loads. Also I never seam to have enough space on the page for comments. Although If you are storing your info on a computer they automatically make room for that. But make hard copies if you want them in the future.

I think that quaint notion died a noisy death when the 2nd person posted to a usenet chat board. I appreciate all the information. |

Put this together for everyone. Just off the Paint tool from Windows. Should work for ya. Let me know if it dosn't.
Real quick, The bottom 4 boxes are for your brass. Just cross them out when you are done with each step. Helps me to remember. Hope you guys like.... If anyone wants to add what info you take at the range, I can make it so the back of these cards have that info as well. Let me know what info should be there... i.e. Group size_______, Recoil______, Range________ you get the idea.... Last edited by loademwell; March 10, 2014 at 04:14 PM. Reason: Add info |

No problem the problem doesn't lie with you. If you need I can e-mail the blank form copies to you so you can take what info you want from them.

I too use a spreadsheet, but instead of Excel, I use the Google Docs spreadsheet. That way, it's 'in the cloud', and I don't have to worry about it being lost. And, it's free. The other benefit is it's available from anywhere... including on my smartphone or tablet. If you're worried about Google knowing too much, with a little extra work the data can be encrypted.
As you'd expect from a spreadsheet, it can do graphs & calculations; you can import photos to accompany the data. Because I can access it in the field (as long as I'm in cell range), I literally input data from the shooting table (i.e. chrono data). If I kept handwritten notes, I'm certain I'd be at a higher risk of making mistakes (I can't read my own chicken scratch half of the time). |
