Questions about Refinishing Shotgun...

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum. I have owned a Scattergun Tech Remington 870 for about 3-4 years now, and put less than a 1000 rounds through it. The wear on the parkerized finish is pretty poor, and at one point I had surface rust. For the money I spent, I was expecting more durability. It is practically a night and day difference in terms of quality compared to my Benelli. Getting back on point, do you guys have suggestions on where to refinish my shotgun? I am looking for a high quality matte black finish. Thanks for your help.

Parkerizing wears better and resists rust much better if you soak the finish with a good lube.

A lube like CLP Breakfree "soaks" into the rough finish, and builds up a protective layer of Teflon.

There are many black finishes around, most of which are variations on a polymer "paint" type coating.

Some of these are not as durable as you'd think and tend to scratch and scrape.

What about powder coating?

CPU77 -- I think that powder coating would add a layer to the overall finish of the metal parts that would not only cause a mis match in the stock to metal surfaces, but there would most likely be some functioning issues as well and some glare problems too. However -- it is an interesting idea and I am wondering if there may be some types of powder coats that are non glare and very very thin skinned?

Powder coat comes in finishes that run from brilliantly shiny to absolutely dead flat.

Build up probably wouldn't NEED to be much thicker than parkerizing.

I've seen powder coated items that the coating wasn't any thicker than the new OD Green coating Remington is using on the new Tactical guns.

I don't know about durability, or scuff resistance on a firearm application.

I'd suspect that some of the modern gun coatings would be better suited and more durable.
