the maiden voyage

so i have though that my newest piece hadn't been fired and definatly doesnt look as tho it had been fired. well it has now! shoots nice accurate as heck and i tried out some differant loads for testing all teting was done with triple 7 fffg powder and at 25ish yards (25 paces)

1. .451 ball 25grains powder---- stay away from .451 ball... after the first shot, one of them rolled out another cylinder

2. .454 ball 25grain powder---- nice light load not too much smoke and stink... 3.5" group

3. .454 ball 30 grains powder---- supposed to be "the perfect load" nice not a bad recoil lots of smoke and stink 3.25" group

4. .457 ball 25 grains powder---- nice group 3.25"

5. .457 ball 30 grains powder----- nicer still 3" group

ok these next tests I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING! IF YOU BLOW YOUR HAND OFF, I WARNED YOU!!!! I TAKE ZERO LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR STUPIDITY!

6. .454 ball 45 grains powder---- wow! and i thought my .45acp had a kick to it! 4" group

7. .457 ball 45 grains powder---- ouch! must be the added weight of the projectile. 4.25" group

8. my personal "snake load" 25 pellets #7 bird shot 25 grains powder---- ineffective for anything until you are 2-3ft from target then it will take 2" diameter pine trees down in 1 shot, zero recoil, a total waste of time and powder...

Whaddaya mean "stink"? BP smoke is healthful and bracing.
Otherwise that was a good range test. Seems like No.5 load is the way to go.

i'm thinking of going out again tomarrow and trying the ffg i bought for 21 bucks... load it like its fffg and see what happens, i will not go over 40 grains though... i like my guns AND fingers just the way they are...

I have a stainless 1858 Rem. Pietta that I bought used, brought home, put in the safe and have never fired. It's not like I don't have bullets/powder/caps, even felt wads. I can shoot it in the yard here.

I don't know . . . I've just never shot it.

I had no idea one could get 45 grains of FFFg into an 1858....or is it that Lyman cylinders are tapped deeper...or is bone crushing pre-compression of the powder needed prior to insertion of the ball?

I can only get 40gr by volume of fffg or ffg Black Powder in my Rems...w/o a lube pill in the load.
But I never owned a Lyman Rem...maybe I should keep an eye out for one.
Who made Lyman rems, Uberti or ASM? or?

My Lymans Remington .44 was made by Uberti. I could not load 45 grs in any of its chambers, especially with a .457 ball.

maybe my powder measure is wrong... i just loaded 45 grains in and .457 ball.... i need to try a differant measure, huh? this is the same measure i was using with my bison and getting 50 grains in.... hmmm.... i wonder.... this pic is with 45 grains and room left over...

i bet it is the measure i just looked at it and the printing on the glass does seem kinda off.... like the 20 is closer to the 30 than the 10...

Is your measure one of the clear test tube style Pyrodex measures? It's probably off by 5 grains. Mine is. It's okay for measuring shot, but for exact measures of powder, I would use one of the adjustable brass measures or maybe the clear plastic ones.

The Hodgdon website lists a MAXIMUM of 25 grains of 777 in the .44 caliber Remington or Colt.
Before you get to the data section, note this warning from the manufacturer of 777, who has access to a modern ballistics lab from which to obtain pressures:

Triple Seven is a high energy product designed to provide the muzzleloading hunter with higher velocities when used in the same VOLUME as blackpowder. To duplicate a blackpowder load velocity using Triple Seven, you must decrease the powder charge by 15%.
