Favorite "N" frame.
Personally I love a model 29! But the only reasons are BC of the caliber and the cosmetics. So what's your fav. N frame? And why?

Have both a 686 (357), and a 696 (.44 spl.). 696 a little more "fun"

I think I would pick the 27 over the 29 because it is more fun to shoot for me, but I don't own either. I do have a Model 25-2 in .45ACP and a 28-2 HP, but I can't pick a favorite between the two.

I really love my 28-2 Highway Patrolman. It is without a doubt my most accurate handgun. Plus I really like the .38 Special round.
The 27 is just too fancy for me.

I'd have to pick my Model 28 over my '27 & 29. Not that its a better gun, but I carried in most of my 20 years in LE. My department gave it to me when I retired.
We kind of got attached to each other. It sure raises heck with bowling pins too.

I have several N frames....
a. model 27's in 4" and 6" ( Nickel and Blued ) b. model 28's in 6" ...all blued...(that's all they made) c. model 29's in 4", 6" and 8 3/8" ....some blued and some Nickel c. model 629's ...in 3" and 8 3/8" ...( stainless - that's all they made) .357 Mag is my all time favorite caliber in a S&W revolver. Model 27's and 28's were some of the first revolvers I shot, when I was a kid in the 50's ....( 158 gr bullets, very accurate, recoil is not abusive...)... .... and the model 28's were the guns that my uncle and my step-dad carried as country law enforcement officers - the "Highway Patrolman" - and a family friend, who was a Highway Patrolman, carried one as well. Model 27's ....were rare in my family when I was growing up ( fancy finish on that gun) vs the model 28 with its satin blue finish ... -------------- If I have to pick one S&W revolver( I have about 25 of them now ) out of my safe, as a favorite it would be a 4" Nickel, model 27-2 ....I'm very fond of that gun...I'm reasonably quick with it in and our of a holster, its long enough to shoot relatively accurately for Tactical practice, fit and finish on it is excellent ( and I have well over 5,000 rds thru it, and I've only owned it about 1 yr....) http://thefiringline.com/forums/atta...1&d=1340222605 This photo is kind of crummy of it ....but its next to a Henry Big Boy rifle in .357 mag...and a Freedom Arms 4 3/4" ocatagonal barrel single action in .357 mag ...that I'm also fond of....but the model 27-2 4" I have is a special gun to me. |

I've got to go with my Model 25 4" in .45 Long Colt.
I searched for one for over a decade.

I have enough trouble narrowing it down to my favorite three.
I'll start with an M25, an M27 and an M57. |

I like them all, but my 4" M-57 would be my first choice.

As much as I like my 44 Specials and even my pre-War Heavy Duty my favorite N-frames are the ones chambered in 45 ACP. And, the best of them is the custom blue steel "Mountain Gun".
Custom because S&W never made one in carbon steel, only the stainless 625 MG. I found a M25-2 that someone had re-barreled with a tapered 6.5" Model of 1950 barrel. I sent it to my gunsmith with instructions to turn it into a Mountain Gun. He cut the barrel to 4", pinned the ramp to the barrel's rib, then pinned the sight blade to the ramp (the way Smith used to do it). He round butted the frame, beveled the leading edge of the cylinder and bead blast & blued the whole thing. Oh, and he timed the action, properly indexed the cylinder, removed excess end-shake and smoothed the trigger action. Yea, this has to be my favorite N-frame. (smile) Dave

Model 25-5 with 8 3/8" barrel. It's a tackdriver with my handloads and recoil is almost non existent with that long barrel.

I only have two, a 1980 model 520 and a 1937 38-44 HD, so, I'll go with one of those.

Toss-up between two .41 Magnums: the 657-4 Mountain Gun or the 657 Lew Horton w/3" barrel and full lug.

These can be fun. Use of auto-rim is fun with these two revolvers.
