.308 sniper/target set up?

I'm looking to get a .308 bolt action for long distance target shooting, and some hunting. $1,200 - $1,500 range. Based on experience, what are your suggestions?

You can go the there web site and learn more . you should be able to get the rifle for around $900-ish that should leave you some money for the scope

. I do own a savage and I'm very happy with it

. They are very well made . This one is on my short list for next gun to buy

I shoot an SPS Tactical AAC-SD. It is the most accurate out of the box rifle I have shot. I have heard great things about the 700P too. I love Sako's and FNH's. But the truth is most big name rifles now will provide the accuarcy you want. I went with 700 just because of massive amounts of add-ons and interchangable parts.

I have a FCP HS in .308 out of their Law Enforcement series. Less than MOA out of the box. Great trigger. Not as many up grades as Remington but a great stock rifle. If interested check out SavageShooters.com for ideas of up grades.

Thanks for the link. I don't think I will require a lot of upgrades. I just need a great stock set up, trigger, and scope. I shot a buddy's Remington 700 target tactical this past weekend....it was really nice!

You cannot go wrong with any choices that were offered. All are great companies and will back their rifles if you did happen to get a "dud". Which ever you choose, enjoy it. My Remington shoots 5/8" groups at 100 yards out of the box with factory Federal Match ammo. That is the only reason I suggested it. I do suggest loading your own for the best possible accuracy.

The others are just as good, I just prefered the SPS Tactical. Like I said, you really would be happy with any of the choices listed. Let us know what you decide, and enjoy...

I own an sps varmint and shoots very well. Doesn't have an hs precision stock but for the price of the rifle you could really load up on glass and options to make a fine tactical rifle.

I own an SPS Varmint in .308, and it shoots .5" groups at 200 yards. I haven't had a chance to stretch its legs past that, but I know it will shoot great.

The gun runs around $550, and that leaves you with about $650 for a nice scope (and maybe a new stock).

are bolt action rifles still the best choice (FORMATE) for a sniper rifle? i am amazed by the accuracy of the ar platform in both 223/556, 308/7.62x 51 and other specialized calibers now popular in the ar platform.

For precision bench shooting, yes, bolt actions are still more accurate.

The only change comes when you are comparing say, a $700 bolt action to something like a $3,000 Les Baer AR.

If I were to buy a heavy barreled .308 right now it would be a Savage or FN A1... I have a Remington 700 PSS which was made before Remington was bought by what is now called the Freedom-Group.. That company has proven to me that they are thoroughly incapable of consistently making a quality product.. Five different guns, all them being new higher end, had problems which required a trip or two or three back for repairs... All of the problem guns were built after Remington was bought out... None of my other Remingtons bought before this time had any problems whatsoever...

I like this Remington but anymore there are other options to consider... I really like the Savage Model 10 FCP McMillan..

At this point..all arrows are pointing at the Savage Model 10 FCP McMillan.

Also considered the 10/110 FCP HS Precision in a .338, but ammo prices and availability were kind of a deterrent.

As I recall I have just under $900 in my Savage 110 FP rig. The base and rings were expensive but the rifle was reasonable and the 10X scope was great money spent. Like it better than my Leupold M3LR.

Savage 10 FCP PS - I've enjoyed mine. Sub .5MOA out to 400 yds so far with my reloads. Aside from the cheek pad and the optic, it is box stock from Savage.

My .308 1MOA semio-auto....an FNAR. The 1MOA was with factory ammo. Just started working on hand loads....it should get better.

Thank you 4RUNNER. It has tuned into my main guest gun for the ladies I end the day with them shooting the 300 yards and now 500 yard plates. I also use it to test loads because if it shoots well in this rifle it will shoot in anything I use.
