The Wedge

I picked up a Pietta 1860 Colt at Cabela's last night - between the $100 gift card from my credit card points, $20 or so in Cabela's points and the $190 sale price, it was a bargain I couldn't pass up.

Oh, the price in the store was $230 on the box and $240 at the register (yes, it rang up at the higher price), but the cashier matched the web site price without even verifying it.

Anyway, I got it home and approached disassembly with some trepidation. I've read the stories about Strong Arm Guiseppe and his Hammer of the Impacted Wedge.

I got out my trusty punch and dead blow hammer and got ready to give it a mighty blow. Then I decided to ease up a little and just give it a whack. And that's all it took. One easy-peasy whack and I pulled the wedge out with my finger.

Oh, I was girded for battle. I had all of my weapons at hand - the vise, the press, the four letter words. But it was all for naught.

Now if the rain will hold off for a couple of days, I'll be having fun at the range!

Congrats on the pistol.

I think I have come to admire the 1860 Colt/1861 Colt pattern above all others.

That is a personal thing of course and I don't mean to resurrect that discussion for the umteenth time.

I favored 1851s for the longest time but I now realize that it was only because it was the first pattern I ever owned. (Brass frame kit purchased through Shotgun News about 1974) Again personal preference.

I knew you had good taste. The 1860s are the best.
