How do you store your BP?
I store my subs just like my smokeless powders, but getting ready to make the jump to Holy Black.
I got the 2007 ATF orange book as a .pdf on my desktop and just looking for a reality check. As an unlicensed citizen I can make and use as a sporting propellant (but not sell) my own BP in quantities more than adequate for my needs. I am likely to burn maybe three or four pounds of pistol powder this year, but I can have up to 50. Catch is by the letter of the law I am supposed to store my BP in a class IV magazine. But I don't think any primers are allowed to be stored in a class 4, class 4 is for low explosives only. So my question is does anyone store their loaded BP ammunition in an ATF certifiable class 4 powder magazine, or do you reckon loaded ammunition is more or less exempt in reasonable quantities, sort of each brass case with copper lid is its own wee tiny magazine, plus the primers probably shouldn't ever be in a class 4 magazine anyway? On the one hand I want to all up my local ATF office and on the other hand I don't. |

I store black powder, synthetic black powder, smokeless powder, percussion caps and pistol primers in their original containers on a shelf in the open air inside an outbuilding.

Keep mine in a 1940's era DuPont dynamite box that I inherited from my Grandfather. It has a hinged lid and a hasp lock. Marked high explosives and it works for me

When I had a lot I would put mine inside an old kitchen stove on an outside corner of my garage. I figured it would act as a fire safe, being insulated and the last thing to burn in case of a fire.

When I have real black which isn't often I keep it in a wood cabinet with the rest of the powder, primers, caps etc. Some in a powder horn and some in a flask.

How do I store my powder? Well let me count the ways. I've got some in-behind my pick-up seat. Some in my wife's SUV. Um? Quite-a-bit on my reloading bench. A full horn or two in my den. A pound or so in my reloading travel bag. Some out in the garage. And some stored in the laundry room. I guess we all go about storing it differently. Since my wife has no objections. End of story.

I built a cinder block box in a wedge shape. Think an upside down pyramid lined with 1/4 inch steel plate. Expanded metal to make the floor flat, some shelves, a tin roof, grounding straps and a lightning rod. Powders in original containers inside 40mm ammo cans. I have those little moisture absorbers in each ammo can. If it ever go's bang it'll probably knock some small plane out of the sky but I should me safe.

Mandatory here to store it in a locked wooden box with dividers inside and intumescent strip on the mouth. Made mine myself but many people buy them.

Mine are on shelves in the garage/shop.
I am working on figuring out the legal way to store my Black Powder. Over 1 lb of Black Powder I am supposed to have a permit and I'm assuming an approved magazine. I just started asking officials today, I'm on my first lap of "run-arounds". |

When I was a dealer, I had to have a licensed powder magazine. Now, I keep my 5 pounds of BP in that same magazine. It's safe, dry, locked away until I want it.
