Winchester 70 .300 WSM

I have a few questions for you experts out there. First off, is the .300 wsm a short action? I am looking through the choice of boyd stocks and would love to order one in the near future. And is a laminate boyd stock going to be a bit heavier than the winchester synthetic stock?

Second, how would I go about finding a barrel with a muzzle brake for this gun? Or just a heavy bull barrel? The thing kicks like a mule and I think making it a bit heavier would help with that.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Yes, any WSM should be on a short action. That's the whole point. If you should run across a WSM cartridge chambered in a long action, don't buy it. Yes, a laminate stock should be a bit heavier than a good synthetic.

A 300 WSM with a muzzle break would be excruciatingly LOUD. Don't get one unless you and everyone within 50 yards of you is wearing earmuffs every single time you fire it.

I had a model 70 300 wsm and I know what you are talking about. I recently just traded for a remington model 700 xcr 300wsm and there is a world of difference just because of the recoil pad which is a limbsaver, my winchester didnt have one. If i were you I would just order a limbsaver pad from like midway and try that first it is the easiest and cheapest to try first.

Ive got a recoil pad on it now, not sure what brand. I may try the limbsaver, I do want a different stock though either way.
I would really like to know more about my options for a barrel. Any other suggestions?

If I was goin to rebarrel it I would find out if a 270 WSM barrel would be a problem to install. I dont know to much about rebarreling one but I would assume the bolt faces would be the same so the only change would be the barrel. The 270 WSM is my favorite wsm by far and its balistics are great, right there with the 270 weatherby. Fast shooting, hard hitting, and recoil is far less that 300 WSM.
