Rifle Id.
Grandfather had this old rifle laying around. Didnt know a whole lot about it. I have been browsing entering numbers I have found on the reciever and the bolt. The only numbers that are clear enough to make out. I dont believe its a springfield 1903.... The number on the reciever is V1736, the six isnt clear. And 446 on the bolt.

Looks like a Spanish Mauser, model of 1893 or 1895, calibre 7x57.
Might be a 1916 converted to 7.62 though. There ought to be a national crest on the receiver ring and the maker's name on the left side. Maybe it was buffed too hard when refinished. |

Some closer photos of the action and action marking should get you an accurate id from the mauser experts.

Jim nailed it.
Spanish Model 1916 short rifle, built on the 1893 Mauser pattern action (the action on a 1895 is similar, but the stock is different). Look at the bolt shroud. And yes, it could be converted to 7.62X51mm, so have it checked. Quote:

Ok, just got back from the gunsmith and he couldnt confirm what round it was chambered for. He said since there arent any markings that he would have to take it apart to tell. He said It doesnt look to be re-chambered as it looks to be the original barrel.
Im gonna go to another gunsmith and get his opinion. I really want to shoot this thing! |
