Imho-- I run 8-32 x50 on all mine. If it is for target shooting only you want something with lots of power.

All you NEED to shoot good groups at 300 is good iron sites.

Magnification is not needed, it is a preference. Your choice may change with experience. If you are only target shooting, the scope you mention will work. What brand is it? Quality glass at lower magnification will be clearer than cheap glass at higher.

If you might hunt with it you should keep your lower end near 4X for close up shots.

How much scope power

For prices most people can afford I recommend Looking at a brand people seem to overlook, Sightron.

If you are primarily target shooting, look at the SWFA 20X. This is what I used for FTR out to 800 yds.

nobody buys low power scopes

Because almost all scopes sold for rifles are at least 9 power any common scope is enough magnification for exactly 300 yards with high contrast targets.

At 300 yards get an ACOG or a CCO and call it a day.

get as good a scope as you can afford i like (6.5x20-8.5x25 leupolds), irons are ok if you shoot at big ass targets ,shoot at a 12" target with a 8" bulls eye at 300yds with irons and then with your scope, and you will see what i mean. i shoot both irons and scopes in different matches and like them both, but the scopes offer better hits on smaller targets. eastbank

For precise target shooting, but as much power in as nice a scope as you can afford. Sure you can shoot 300 yards with a 9X easy, but a nice 24X or up makes precision shooting easier. There's a reason the benchrest guys use high powered target scopes.

When I was shooting bench rest rifle there was only one scope seen on 99% of rifles. They were all the same power (24x, not variable). A scope will not make you a better rifleman nor will it improve your rifle or loading ability. It will however let you focus in on the things that will improve those things.

So I decided to get a Leupold 8.5-25x50 what type of redical would work best. I'm considering a fine duplex over the target dot.

You don't need more than 6-8X at that range to shoot 2-3" groups. Not many guns will do better than that.

Leupold

Fine Duplex for sure. A dot of any size might just cover your x or 10 ring. I saw a leupold fine duplex target at my 22 benchrest and it was very nice. In 22 bench rest the X marker is a dot about the size of a period. About any other reticle hides the spot where you're aiming if you're really going for accuracy and you plus your rifle is capable.

It's not much but finer helps you see where your aiming. With the 24x and up, you will notice your breathing moving the rifle around, unless it is heavily bagged and your barely touching the thing.

I have a Mullet, a Leupold and some Bushnell Elites. The Bushnell's are very nice for the price. All of these would work well at 300+. I found the Elite 3200 was a little brighter then the leupolds.

That is fine, its one most of us are used to but I would suggest that you will find your best shooting will be somewhere between 9X and 12X. beyond that unless you are tied down solid on a good bench you will have to much jitter in your scope for a good sight picture.

at the varmit matches in production class, if you can,t keep your shots in under 2 " at 300 yds, you may as well **** your money off the bridge. the ten ring is about 1-3/4 inches, you shot 5 shots at 200,300,500 yds,six minutes for each relay and the winners score in the lower 140 to mid 140,s with the x count breaking the ties and there are no low end scopes used. eastbank.

If you're wanting a fine dot then check out the Weaver Classics. I have a 4-16 that I run on my .22 that I use for silhouette that works very well. You certainly don't need a lot of power shooting out to only 300.

Leupold VX-2 6-18x40mm Are more than good enough for 500 yards and are popular with a lot of shooters. Takes a good rifleman to take advantage of full power and a good solid rest for the gun. This is when you want to be able to shoot between heartbeats.

No offense meant here, But 2 to 3 inch groups at 300 yards is not good enough for me. If this ( as he says) is for target shooting. For hunting that's good enough. As well this is not a plug for Savage either, but all my Savages,223,243,22-250,308,6MMBR will all shoot better than 2 inches at 300 yards with ease. My 6MMBR will do 3 to 4 inch at 600 yards with ease.

Eldermike-- I shoot F-Class. The only power is see more than any other is a straight 36 power, and now the 42 power is coming on strong as well.

Serious question for you guys shooting one minute of angle or less with magnification ....... how much barrel cool-down time do you allow between shots ?

When I shoot , I shoot my 3 shot groups inside of 90 sec and really inside of 60 sec most of the time . Im of the thought if you don't take your shots one after the other it's not a group . I will then let the barrel cool with the bolt open for 5 or so min sometime less sometimes more then shoot again .

Chipchip-Sorry for changing gears on your post!
Metal God- How many rounds do you shoot during a range trip on the same rifle? What would be considered damaging or too much? Thanks
