Full Lug Smiths.......

Under the "Pinned Barrel...." thread, a couple of misguided souls attempted to besmirch the beauty of such a set up, that is, a full lug barrel on a DA revolver from that august firm of Smith & Wesson. I offer for your viewing pleasure my Smith Model 29 with 5" full lug barrel:

And, for a small sized revovler, the Model 586:

And, for those who question the portability of the Model 586, those of us of a more robust constitution have no problem:

Yea I like their look Bob. Esp that 29 in a 5in. Ever see a Model 29 magna classic? they look great, 7.5 full lug. People say the half lug looks better only because they are more used to it, as it came first in S&W model history.

Here is my nickel 4 in 586 no dash and my 686-3. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I seem to remember reading that it is impossible to hit anything firing double action. Maybe not true?

It is likely more true for most of the people who buy double actions and then shoot them mostly single-action. Then there are those of us who remove the hammer spur and shoot them as they are intended. Having just finished with Jordan's book, "No Second Place Winner", I noticed that there were several pictures of his gun without a spur on the hammer. He was the one who shot aspirins.

I once owned a Smith & Wesson Model 10, blued .38 special, with an underlugged barrel. I don't remember what dash- it was, though. It was made exactly like the Model 65LS that was being sold at the time. Supposedly it was one of those production overrun versions that was made for some police force in another country. It was unusual and one of two or three dozen guns I should have kept.

I also had another S&W revolver that had, I think it was, a 4 1/4" barrel, presumably intentionally. It was either a Model 10, 64 or 65. Don't remember which. These were all over ten years.

I saw the half and full lugs at the same time for the first time in 1996. I thought the half lug looked better. I think it still looks better.

Ok. I gotta admit that I do have ONE full lug barrel handgun. It's not a Smith & Wesson, but it's a first cousin by another mother, or something.

Sort of reminds me of a Python.

Good lookin' pistola there Bob...and one that's been on my watch for list for years. Sooner or later, one'll show up.

I've got a 6-1/2" barreled model that's a bit muzzle heavy for my tastes, and doesn't carry as well as the shorter barreled option either. Here it is in the buff and fully dressed! Yep, I know its got fuggly grips. As to the leather; son #2 did the belt, using the buckle off a pre-1900 McClellan saddle stirrup leather, and I did the holster...(it's not as pinkish as it looks in the pic, something to do with the room lighting when I took the pic). I love my 4" M586. It may not be as big as the 29, but I don't think I'd call it little. I usually carry it in a shoulder rig with two comp II speed loaders on the off side, but I got a couple belt slides for it too. I currently want an original nickel plated 4" or 5 7/8" M586 and a 2" M686 round butt.

While I generally prefer the half-lug, I will admit that a full-lug looks OK on shorter barrels (3" or shorter), but on longer barrels I definitely prefer the half-lug.

OK , first of all , those are beautiful revolvers. Better yet I have finally gotten almost all of the soda out of my nose after reading Mike Irwin's comment about the O/Under Shotgun during mid drink. No more reading his posts and enjoying my rootbeer at the same time. (I assume that it is not good for my laptop to spray rootbeer out of my nostrils in a fine mist at high pressure onto the screen. At least not more than once.)

I'm lovin the talk of the 586 in this thread. I picked one up 6 or 7 months ago and it quickly converted me to revolvers. Now I need to look into picking up an N frame...

I'd have to confess to be a besmircher. I like the unlugged looks better. The lay nicely when shooting, but I dont care for carrying them, or the looks.

Had a 5" lugged barrel that I installed on my 6" 29. Didn't last long, just didnt care for the looks. Sold the barrel on the smith forum. Have a 6 1/2" lugged 629 Classic barrel I'd gladly swap for a mountain gun barrel.

The large frame gun is a 54 guage, the smaller is 96 guage. Only the top barrels are functional. The lower barrel is just for appearance and muzzle steadiness.
