J C Higgins .22 Rifle

Does anyone have any information on J C Higgins (Made for Sears) Model 10313.
.22 S,L,LR, bolt, tube fed, can't find serial number anywhere.. A local parts dealer thinks it was made by Marlin for Sears (took Marlin target sight base)

According to my records, your .22 is a Marlin model 81, made for Sears, from 1937-1940. If my memory serves, during this period serial numbers were not requied.

Hi, could any one out there tell me about what year my rifle is. You have to pull the shell engager on the left side, and when you shoot it, the shells kicks out on the right side.It's a Model 30, then after the sears and robuck it has number583.70-----Chambered for 22 L.R. only. No serial number that I can find. The stock is a two piece stock, with a carring strap, that pulls out of the butt stock, and pulls forward to clip on the bottom of feeder tube for shells. Thank's. any help I'd appereaciate.-----Ron.

There was a model 30 which used .22LR's only, and a model 31 which would run on .22shorts, longs, or long rifles. Odd looking guns with he fore end having kind of extentins towards the rear that covered up the reciver's sides, and many had an odd roll-away sling (it spring coiled back up into the butt stock, and you could pull it out and hook it to a stud on the mag. tube...kind of like an old-time window shade). Know they were marketed into the early 1960's. I THINK the Sears number was 583.75 for this one, but I might be wrong (and my books are all lost).

BUt the above gun has such unusual features that I belive you'd have mentioned them....so I tend to go with Harley on this one, and put it farther back in time.

i have a higgins model 30 and it is the most accurate 22 i have ever shot.
all my friends are amazed at this old cheap rifle and they all want it!

My dad has a higgens 30 model # 583.74, without the leftside engager. What I found was Sears owners parts list for model 30 583.70 -583.74. Revised January 1954 so the model 583.70 would fit in the 1949-1950 year. I would guess that.

Problem with mine is it won't auto load, in effect a single shot, been like that as long as I have known. The shell would get caught by the action bar as it came forward, the shell wouldn't lift high enough to slide into the chamber and jam. Trying to find parts.

Also the model 30 is accurate, very accurate. Tack driver even with the 4 power kind of hazy(due to the age) scope.

Serial number were not require on all guns until the 1968 law. It costs money to put on serial numbers and keep records, so most manufacturers didn't do so up to that time on inexpensive guns, especially shotguns and rifles.

I have the model 30 and I had my share of feed problems. I recently bought a S & W M & P 15-22 and they recommended Winchester M-22 ammo. It is 40g with a copper plated bullet. I took both rifles to the range and when I finished with the S & W I decided to fire off a few rounds of M-22 with the model 30. I couldn't believe it. 45 rounds and not a single jam. 90 rounds and still going strong. It looks like the model 30 likes the copper jacketed rounds. I just thought I would pass it along to you. Now if I could only find some more M-22 rounds I could really enjoy a day at the range.
