What type screws in butt plate of Remington 1187?

Can anyone please tell me what type screws are in the butt plate of a 1187? I can't see the head through the holes in the recoil pad. I was told it was a hex head but tried every size there was and didn't get a fit.

If the manual doesn't say or show you, try a phillips - use some liquid soap on the screwdriver shaft to make it easy to go through the recoil pad

Thanks I tried that before the allen wrenches but didn't get a fit there either

I just replaced my 870's factory stock (Remington told me that 1187/870 use the same stock).

The holes on the recoil pad are really deceiving, I actually used a standard size phillips (or maybe a little bigger) screwdriver to unscrew it.

Apply soap or non-corrosive lubricant around the shaft of the screwdriver like oneounce said, and unscrew counter clockwise. Don't be afraid to use a little force.

If it is not a phillips then??? I doubt it's flat head, maybe Torx?

Remington uses Phillips screws in the butt pad.
A #2 usually fits.

They can be aggravating and you can't see them, which caused people to think they're not Phillips.

Indeed, which causes people to use the wrong type or size screwdriver and round out the screws. Last couple of used Remington shotguns I've bought I've had a helluva time replacing the factory pads with limbsavers. In two cases I've actually had to cut the old pad off and take pliers to the old screws to get them out.

As you say..........aggravating..........
