S.W.A.T. Mentioned on Fox News

I'm told by reliable sources that an "expert" on Fox News last night mentioned us in the following context:
Quote:
You can bet that when they find this guy, they'll find a lot of "salacious" material like Soldier of Fortune and S.W.A.T. Magazine.
Salacious? I think that means "obscene".

Interesting. I wonder if all the LEO's and Agencies that I show on our Subscriber List are aware that their reading interests are "salacious"?

I am about sick and tired of my hobby, which is not only legal but constitutionally enshrined being treated like kiddie porn.

Damn, I missed that!

Have seen Mark Furhman (sp?) of OJ debacle, uh, I mean trial, fame the last couple of nights. Think what you will of this guy, but IMO he's been one of the most intelligent of the "experts" interviewed thus far.

Rich, your getting famous (or is it infamous?) TFL was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal.

I don't think of SWAT as porn, though there was that one picture of Flint showing us his belly band.

Screw the news. They never get anything right anyway.

Actually, if the gouge from the Tactical Forums is correct the expert in question is Eric Haney.

Rich,

It was retired Sergeant Major Eric Haney. He just published a book on his years in the special operations unit the army doesn't acknowledge exists.

He made some other rather inane comments.....Doesn't his publisher advertise in S.W.A.T.? So maybe he's trying to sell his book to the same group he just slandered?

Or maybe his book shouldn't be published...it would probably only be read by wannbes and budding terrorists. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Pehaps a S.W.A.T./TFL Boycott is in order.

If I`d known there was salacious material in SWAT, I would have subscribed ages ago!

I hope the sniper is a Mother Jones/Atlantic Monthly reader.....

(guess that wouldn`t be relevant)

SWAT salacious? How icky. I mean who would want to have sexual relations with Brent Wheat? [shudder]

I really into firearms, but I prefer the young and nubile myself, not that there's anything wrong with that kind of thing.

Well, I guess I'll stuff my copies of SWAT up under the mattress and hope Oleg doesn't find them....

I did almost have a "salacious" moment when I saw the article on the new Taurus Tracker, but that quickly ended when I read that the cartridges would easily spill from the moon clips.

Salacious huh?

Is there going to be a SWAT channel on my late night cable TV soon?

My guess is that these people are the same type of extremists that would have Tom Sawyer or Catcher in the Rye banned from school english classes.

If they don't like it it's destined to become a classic literary tome.

Between this and the recent post by Chaim, I wonder when the Feds will drop in to subpoena TFL's records and start backtracking the IP addresses of 16k+ members.....

Guess I'll go put on my tin-foil hat and barricade myself in the closet now....

New letters section?

Dear S.W.A.T.,

You aren't going to believe this, but it really happened to me. I was reading your really cool magazine when I heard a wicked loud crash. I quickly jumped into my mall ninja gear and did a full sabrina as I exited our frat complete with a forward somersault w/ a half twist like Mel Gibson does in those way phat Lethal weapon flicks.

Once I was outside, I could see that a sorority tour bus had rear-ended a beer truck......

A thousand gun control laws would not have prevented this massacre. What am I doing?"

Tamara wrote that she is sick and tired of her constitutionally enshrined right to keep and bear arms (I've liberally paraphrased) being treated like kiddie porn.

A few months ago, I had gotten a new issue of American Handgunner, and was reading it while getting the oil changed in my car at one of the local Jiffy Lubes. A woman with two young daughters (I'd guess around 6 and 9) came in and sat down next to me. I heard one of the young ones whisper to her mom: "Mommy, there are pictures of guns!"

I was really appalled. I was embarrassed, but I shouldn't have been. Geeeze....

And did you smile your most friendly smile and engage them in conversation?

"Yes, kiddo, my magazine has lots of pictures of guns in it. I like to learn about guns. Has your mom taught you what to do if you see a gun at your friend's house?"

As for being embarrassed. You can be sure that the poor mom wanted to fall right through the floor, when her daughter "whispered" loudlly enough for you to hear!

I wish I had smiled my most friendly smile and engaged them in conversation. As I said, my immediate reaction was embarrassment, as if I had been caught reading the most explicit porn in public. I guess I'm letting myself get beaten down by the anti's. *sigh* In fact, when I got home, and told my husband about it, I said that I felt like i'd been seen reading a porn mag in public. Next time, I'll do it differently. Having grown up in Idaho, now living in the SF bay area in California, things are so different here. I'm not accustomed to having to defend my values at this level.

I'm with Tamara on this-

Law abiding shooters are getting pretty tired of being vilified for their safe and LEGAL hobby. To say nothing about practicing the ability to defend yourself. But I think the thing that irritated me the most was a post from someone (sorry, I don't remember who) which stated that their daughter had came home from school and said her teacher had put up the second amendment worded as-- "The Right To Have An Army".
I'm still not over that one! DAMMIT! A grade school teacher changing the Bill Of Rights.
Plus, I'm not very happy about the "salacious" shot either. Maybe they think S.W.A.T. should be delivered in a "brown paper wrapping". What does the "salacious" thing mean? That we won't be just as happy when this whacko is caught?

Watching Haney now on Fox. Intelligent and articulate.

However, he's got a book out, Inside Delta Force: The Story of America's Elite Military Unit. I have to wonder what magazines he thinks HIS readers subscribe to. ???

It means that some ignoramous likes to use big words without understanding what they mean.

Yeah, I'm with you, KR. It's enough to make steam come out of my ears!

Redhead, I didn't and don't mean to imply criticism of the way you handled it ... was just thinking out loud. On another thread, someone (ahenry?) commented that gun owners contribute to the fear that antis have, by acting as though our guns are something to be ashamed of. It's hard to change the culture that way!

That said, I'm glad not to live in the Bay Area anymore. I grew up down there, and the culture is really ... different ... from the rest of America.

Rich,

I don't know what magazine his readers subscribe to, because I dropped his book off my list after I heard that. The insult to S.W.A.T. aside, his comments gave me some insight into the possible tone of his book.

I think that the quality of SOF has gone down in the past couple years, S.W.A.T. has definiately become the leading mass market magazine of it's type in quality. I find a lot of it is higher quality then the limited distribution professional journals in both the police and military fields.
