The public knowing who owns guns

I've heard many comments that some of the new proposed legislation will lead to others knowing who owns guns. Do you really care that people know that you own guns of any type? While some view it as an invasion of privacy, I could personally care less who knows I own guns, including handgun and assault weapons. I'd put a red sticker on my front window if they mandated it for gun owners. I just really don't see that as a major problem. I'd like to hear from those who do and why they care.

It's no one's business if I own any guns. Also, it could be argued that any list published about gun owners just helps the criminal element if that's what they're after.

Making public the information of who owns guns is a big concern. The tighter restrictions get the more theft will take place. As more and more people become ineligible to own legally, they will just resort to stealing making all of us legal folks targets.

This. If it weren't for that I could care less but it would basically be like telling criminals where to go to steal a gun.

I think that HEPA laws concerning privacy will start to be applied to gun ownership.

Aside from the potential targeting of my home by burglars intent on stealing weapons, I dont want anyone, most of all the government, knowing how many and what kind of guns I have when they come to illegally confiscate them. Remember Ray Nagin during Hurricane Katrina?

If i was a theif. I would target the homes that dont have guns.....easy money. Sheep to a slaughter. On all doors to my house i have signs that say "this house guarded with a smith and wesson alarm system, and a pic of a wheel gun". Buts thats me

Except that there are a lot of 'smarter than average' and very successful burglars who will target a house and case it for days...or even weeks. They watch to establish a schedule of when the residents are home and when they are not. These kinds of burglars will hit a house when they are comfortable that they will be uninterrupted when they do finally break in.

That is beside the point though.

Knowing who has them means that the government does too..this is what I fear is most dangerous.

I see it as a VERY major problem. First, it's none of my neighbor's business what I have inside MY house.

Second, why not just leave the doors unlocked and post a sign that says "Free guns inside. Rob me first"?

In most states, no. Yes, the FFL calls in for a background check. Under the laws as they now stand, the .gov is not allowed to retain a record of that check for more than 30 (60?) days. That may change, but that's the law today.

The 4473 you fill out stays with the FFL.

My wife and I feel that a published list of those of us owning guns is a horrible and terrifying ordeal. It truly isn't anyones business if we own guns and what kind of guns we own.

Of course it's none of their business, But if any of your neighbors asked if you had guns would you tell them " it's none of your business" or would you tell them that you do? Is it totally a privacy issue, are you ashamed of them knowing, or are you just worried about robbery? Do you think guns are a major target of thieves?

If your guns are properly secured ie( in a safe, vault, hidden), why would you worry that they would find them?

How about posting the names and addresses of cancer patients and others in chronic pain with a list of the narcotics they can be expected to have in their medicine chests?
Drugs are dangerous afterall, and surely its better that the neighbors know that drugs are present in their neighborhood. The fact that such a list would draw junkie burglars and home invaders like flies is just the price to be paid.

It is a good comparison imho. Though they are not trying to make narcotics public knowledge it has the same effect and shows the same attitude had by those who wish to enact such laws. Whats good for the goose is good for me too so its apples to apples.

I care. A lot. It is nobody's business what property I own. My close friends and family know I have firearms in my house (all secured in safes). But I don't want anyone targeting my house for theft based on the fact they know I have some pretty expensive weapons. It would be like advertising that I have a collection of Rolex and Omega watches in my house. That comparison is pretty accurate since some of my firearms cost about as much.

It is just nobody's business.
