ruger 357 GP 100

I was at a local gun shop and they have a ruger 357 GP 100 for a price of 539.00. was wondering what you think sense I am not very knowledgeable about hand guns. I want it for home defense and a side arm for hunting. I also don't want to break the bank.

New? Stainless?

That's the price quoted for a stainless 6" barrelled model on GunsAmerica .... there is a used stainless 4" one for $375.....

I got a 4" Blued model with wood grips for $579 new. The stainless version was $549.

You can find used GP100 for around $400 all day long. I bought one for $400 and did some trigger work and its now one of my best shooters. The GP100 is one of the finest 357 magnums made now. Can't go wrong. Another option would be Ruger Security Six. Its the father of the GP100 and is tough as nails. Either one would make a fine first revolver for home defense.

I agree, it's a fine gun, but that's too much money. In our area ( Orygun ) it would go for about $350.

I own two.
They are robust, easily cleared and cleaned, accurate, reliable, and inexpensive.

If it's new, that's a fair price.

As far as the Ruger GP100, it is in my opinion one of the two best .357s on the market right now with the other being the S&W 686. The GP is well built, accurate and very reliable. It is every thing you want out of a SD home gun and a hunting sidearm.

The GP-100 is a good choice: tough, reliable, and accurate. As for the price, it never hurts to shop around a little bit.

Buddy I was with was quoted 499 for a 6" blued from a local gun shop.

Good solid gun. That is teh going rate for a new one here. I'd feel perfectly safe buying one used if you can save a few $$$$. Even if you get one that someone has screwed up Ruger will fix it for you.

Normal going price from a local gun shop. buy it, you will not regret it! It will be one of the finest revolvers money can buy.

Years ago I traded a Security Six for a GP100 and always regretted it. Although arguably tougher with its extra latch on the crane, the GP was bigger and heavier and I could never get it to shoot it nearly as well as the Security Six. The Six also had the nicest factory grip of any centerfire revolver I've owned - it fit MY hand perfectly. YMMV, of course, but if it were me looking for a Ruger 357 I'd look for a Security Six.

Great guns, but for your stated use, their smaller SP-101 might be better. It doesn't sound like you'll need to make any longer shots with it.

Rugers are tough, and rarely go out of time, so used ones are good buys too.

It is a fair price for a new one, but nothing to rush over.

That's a fair price (NIB) for a new GP100. I think everybody els is just trying to confuse you. Simple question, simple answer.

If I thought I needed another full size .357, I'd get it and pay that. Of cource I paid twice that for my .357s,
