..on a new shotgun.

I have been bitten hard by the 3-gun bug...and I want a new shotgun!

Actually, I have two serviceable pump shotguns--a Winchester 1300 and a Remington 870. Both are smooth and work well--but I want a good semiauto.

So, out of the shotguns noted, which would you pick--and why? Help me out here....

Winchester/FNH SLP
Remington 1100 Tactical
Remington 1187P
Mossberg 930 SPX

These are within my price envelope, with the SLP being at the top end.

Yes, I know--Benelli makes a superb shotgun, but they're a little pricey for my taste.

Here are some further specs:

1. Must be able to cycle trap loads--7, 7 1/2 and 8 shot
2. Must be able to accept 2 3/4 and 3" shells
3. barrels available to accept chokes a plus, but not strictly necessary

Also--for those who will answer that are well versed in 3-Gun Competition, what do you think about taking a regular shotgun, putting a mag extension on it, and going for broke? That is another option....of course.....

I have owned an FN SLP for the past 3 years. I've used it against the Benelli m4 and it cycles just as fast. For 3-gun you want either the SLP Mark 1 or the SLP Competition.

I have a 28-inch barrel for mine for trap, and use 1-1/8 oz, #8 target loads in it with the heavy gas piston and it runs fine. For lighter loads I have to change to the light gas piston. Changing a gas piston take about 2-3 minutes start to finish.

If you want to turn it into a real hotrod, send it to SRM Performance and have them install the SureCycle system, modify the gas pistons, and do the reliability/performance tune-up.

The gun uses Invector style chokes; is extremely soft shooting; and runs unbelievably fast with 100% reliability. All of the shotguns you have listed are fine guns.

Most people are not as familiar with the SLP as they are with the Remington or the Mossberg. If you have a chance to look at and SLP, you will see a real difference in how the gun is built compared to the Remington you have listed and the Mossberg. The Remington that compares to the SLP is the VersaMax.

If you want a good semi-auto cheap then go to a gun show and buy a Winchester Model 59. They are light as a feather and well designed. We used to use them in Vietnam because they were light and had that plastic barrel and aluminum receiver. Really a great gun.
