Bow hunting success pics '08
Lets see what you've arrowed this year...........and give us some details
Small 8 pointer Where: Orange Co., NC Date: Friday Sept. 19th at 7:10 PM. Range: Straight down Bow: PSE Nova Shaft: Easton XX75 2315's (yes I still use aluminum) Broadhead: NAP Shockwave 125gr. He milled around for 20 mins before I had any kind of shot. When he first came out he was 40 yds away and through some brush. When I finally had a clear shot he was almost straight beneath me. Not an easy shot to make. Arrow went through and stopped. He broke the shaft about 4 inches from the broadhead and the rest backed out of him when he ran. Never found the broadhead but recovered the broken shaft ~20 ft from where he was shot. Deer ran 40 yds. |

Great hunting. I have the stands set up and will be trying the deer out about the first of NOV. Do you black powder hunt? I wish you luck on the rest of your season.

I never got into bow hunting due to the hot weather and the skeeters, but I will stay in the woods when black powder and rifle season starts. Dang, I wished I was retired, my wife would not see me from early NOV. to Jan. 1

Well season here doesn't open up till Oct 1st. RR, have you had a problems with the ferruls/tips bending and breaking on those shockwaves? My dad did. He never got to reuse one. Several folks I know had the same problem.

Nope, I've re-used several of them. I went back looking on Saturday for the one that was lost on this deer. Arrow stuck out of his underside about 4" and broke off. Never found the end of the shaft or the broadhead.

Saturday morning I was walking back to my truck. I had hunted from a ground blind for a couple hours and hadn't seen anything. My nephew was in my climbing stand and my FIL was on the other side of the farm in his stand.
I passed one of the recent clearcuts on my way up the gravel road that connects the two main fields of this farm. I look down the edge of the clearcut/woods and I see a VERY nice buck standing there. Looked to be a wide 10 point. He's quartering away from me at about 40 yds. I started easing my way toward him. He doesn't see or smell me. He casually strolls into the edge of the trees and stops. I've got a big oak tree now giving me cover to move forward. I ease forward more. I'm now about 25 yds away. He's still concealed behind the big oak and there aren't too many shooting windows. At this point I notice another deer, nice 8 point, has walked out of the clearcut into the opening the first deer was standing in when I first saw him. I've now got a 25 yd broadside shot on him, but no shot on the bigger deer. I start to raise my bow and draw and lo and behold the THIRD buck (who was behind the second one in the clearcut) busts me and takes off at a trot. Needless to say the two others join him. 2 more seconds is all I needed to take the second one. What can I say, can't kill 'em all.............. |

Ranting, Great deer and congrats! Tell the nephew congrats also on his doe(great eating size). I was wondering why their not field dressed out? I have been seing this more often and wondering why hunters arent field dressing their deer in the field rite away due to meat spoilage and excess heat not being released quickly as it should plus the yucky stuff thats in the body cavity after its been shot that can make the meat rancid tasting:barf:. We have had real warm weather here up north and we have to immediatly field dress the deer out and pack them with ice to cool them so the meat dont spoil. I also have a seperate room sectioned off in my garage with a real cold A/C unit so im able to hang them for a few days. If I didnt have that, They would have to be butchered immediatly. I am just curious as to why more and more hunters are doing this. Thanks and good luck the rest of the season. Yummy backstraps on the grill.

Typically we field dress as soon as we recover the deer. Both of these were shot at just about the same time at almost the end of legal shooting light. We got them to the truck quickly and hauled butt to the processor (25 mins away) we gutted there and got them in his cooler.

I also think alot of guys who post pics are loading the deer and heading to the hunt camp house to field dress them and many just live near by to the woods.
Cool shootin' there! I don't bow hunt but do the general gun season... Brent |

My bow hunting success pics for '08 are blank - got shut out (again) hunting roosevelt elk in Oregon.
Do have some great mental pics of a monster bull that kept us just out of shooting range for 4 straight days, and the biggest black bear I have ever seen in the wild. It was unsuccessful as far as putting meat in the freezer, but very successful as far as being close to animals, away from work and worries, and restoring my soul. Rifle deer opens here this weekend... Good Hunting!

They made a new rule on base where you have to kill a doe before killing a buck. So I went ahead and reduced this doe to possession. She weighed about 113lbs.
I was trying out a new broadhead for me, Magnus Snuffer SS. It worked out just fine. She went about 60 yards after the hit, and went down on the run. The dragging picture is the entry, and the posed pic is the exit. Mmmmm, backstraps.... 100_1890.jpg 100_1892.JPG

I finally managed to get decent buck with my bow this year. Easiest bow season for me. 1st day I hunted, I got to my stand and settled in about 7:00 which was a little later than I had planned. The stand overlooks a bean field that luckily hasn't been picked yet. About 7:15 I spotted movement across the field about 70 yds away. Hey! It's a deer....cool! Then he raised his head. A nice buck....really cool! I thought sure he would just eat a while and go back into the timber where he came from. Nope, he walked straight to me and stopped broadside at about 15 yds away with no clue I was there. I shot at 7:20.......
High Country Sky Force bow, Game Tracker Carbon Sidewinder arrow, Rocket Aeroheads Sidewinder LT expandable broadhead. It shoots about 285 fps. I waited very impatiently for about 1 1/2 hrs before I left the stand. I was confident with the shot. It was midway between the shoulder and diaphragm and about 1/2 way between the top of his back and the bottom of his chest. As he ran away, he turned so I could see the opposite side.....he was bleeding A LOT! I KNEW he was dead, but I waited just in case. I got to watch a few does and fawns and got a shot at a turkey while I was waiting. Easy blood trail to follow that ended with my 10-point buck about 100yds from my stand. My nicest buck yet.
