Bought my first AR

Howdy folks, haven't been around much lately. Haven't been up to much, shooting wise... until today. I went to my LGS and got an M&P 15 Sport. Haven't shot it yet, but so far I'm impressed. I've kind of been turned off by ARs the past few years, but the ability to super customize it.

Also, the price had kept me away. You could find them in the same price range as the Sport, but without sights, or without the ability to mount any optics.

First thing I want to add, I don't even know what its called, and I don't know who makes them. Anyway, its a grip that attaches to the mag well. Any ideas?

I'll try to put some pictures up tomorrow.

Great choice! I picked up the same rifle myself earlier this week. For the price you cannot go wrong. Definitely the most bang for your buck with this gun. Hope you enjoy it.

Probably talking about the Mako.

YES! Thanks for the answer!

Another question... what uppers, caliber wise, will fit on a standard 5.56 lower? I know the 22 LR 6.8 spc and the 300 Blackout, but what else? Thanks!

Anything that will fit the magazine/magazine well. A fairly recent list with a few, but probably not complete, recent update. Some will require specialized magazines/magazine filler blocks.

Another question; what size handguard does the sport take? Also, AR handguards, do they go by inches? Or is there a standard small, medium, large? Just wonderin', thanks again!

The Sport is a carbine length.

You could try holding on to what is there with your hands. Lower weight being the primary benefit. That is what the marines do!

Some more questions:

How do I get a bayonet to fit on this guy? The bayonet lug is WAY back from the muzzle.

Is there any way of knowing whether or not an optic will see over the front sight post?

Yes, it will. The FS will be in the optic, but below the aiming point. In a scope, you will not be able to really focus on it, so it is rather invisible.

On a dot sight, you will see it, but it will be lower than the dot.

Sorry, I should have clarified; I mean, is there a way to tell if an optic will fit BEFORE I buy it, or are there front sight post-specific rings that are designed to be high enough to see over.

Sorry, carbine length gas on a 16" barrel is a no-go for the bayonet. You'd need midlength gas with 16" or carbine gas with 14.5".

Anyone have any answers for this?

Sorry, I should have clarified; I mean, is there a way to tell if an optic will fit BEFORE I buy it, or are there front sight post-specific rings that are designed to be high enough to see over.

Basically, I'm afraid of buying a scope/optic, mounting it, and then finding out the sight (as in, the post below the actual sight) is blocking my optic.

Buy any optic you want. You can get rings, or combination of rings and riser block that will provide sufficient clearance above the front sight for anything you buy... honest.

Cheers,
C

The front sight post well not be visible with a scope of 4X or more, it disappears.

You can use a folding front sight with a 1-4 scope.

You co-witness with red dots. Red dot on ADM raiser.

My Sport came with a handguard that did not have a heat shield (aluminum sheet metal). It got hot pretty quick. I replaced it with a magpul MOE handguard and put the forward grip on it.

Here's mine with the new OD green Magpul.
