I have a Chrome HP that I want to replace the sights on. The local shop said the front sight is Silver soldered on and cant be romoved without damaging the gun. Their suggestion was to keep the front sight or grind it down and cut a dovetail into the sight base. Is there any other way to replace the sight?

Heat it up, break it off, and THEN cut your dovetail. You'll still need to sand the remaining silver solder off any surfaces not removed for the dovetail.
I don't trust silve solder for front sight installations. Had one take a flying leap. |

Cobraman, sounds to me like your local shop is giving you the straight scoop. That's what I'd recommend. George
