With your original requirements in mind, I'd go with the Stoeger Cougar. The barrel may be just shy of four inches, but Dollar for Dollar I can't think of a better value.

The same gun cost twice as much back when it had the Beretta name on it and it works every bit as good now.

I've owned both and still have the Stoeger.

For the money...Ruger p95 all the way...SR9 close behind. If you have the extra 100 bucks get the glock.

Buying the best only hurts once, when you pay for it.

Buying cheap hurts every time you use it.

Make whatever monetary sacrifices you must, but get what fits YOU and fills your needs best. Take my word for it. You won't regret it.

Also, don't skimp on the accessory gear (holster, training, eye and ear protection). You can search for bargains in ammo, but don't skimp on practice, either. Getting a 22 rimfire gun similar to your primary weapon will afford you lots of practice, or even a BB gun or Airsoft analog to your primary is good.

The best gun to have in a gunfight? One you can hit with.

I have the EZ 40 and it is flawless, well made, and 300 shots later not a single problem. Best of all I got it NIB for 390$. Only complaint I had is it only came with one mag :-(

Have you found a good carry holster for your Stoeger? I'm looking to get a Cougar soon myself possibly for IDPA, but can't decide whether to get a 9mm (cheapest ammo and more rapid follow-ups) or the 40S&W. I get free 40S&W ammo, but I don't think 40S&W is the right choice for IDPA. I'm getting conflicting stories about magazine capacities for the Stoeger as well. Is it 10+1 or 11+1?

The Stoeger Cougar 9mm is one of the greatest guns I ever owned.

Only has a 3.6 barrel but it is accurate, dependable, shoots any ammo and just a well made gun. You can buy them for around $400 and they are worth every penny.

Used S&W 3rd Gens, Cougars, and Tanfoglios (the Witness line) come to mind when people ask about inexpensive yet quality pistols.

Head to the shops and try 'em all on.

Maybe a Bersa Thunder 380 CC, only @ $300. and reviews are excellent. I'm a Kimber guy, but have checked out the Bersa, and its well made and reliable, I believe its an Argentinian product, but they are doing something right and its CHEAP!!!! in price but not quality.
