Holster

I'm thinking I'll carry my 1858 Remington at camp this summer, but I'll be needing a holster for it. Any suggestions?

Oh... 5 1/2" barrel.

Try Cabela's for an inexpensive holster. They're a little snug fitting for my tastes but for what you want they'll be ok.

I see they have 'em in right or left, but didn't see mention of barrel length. Do most just buy 'em for the 8", regardless their barrel length?

Never looked for a 5 1/2 inch. All my bp pistols are 8 inch. I don't think 2 1/2 inches of extra holster will get in your way. I've been wrong before tho.

Now that you mention it; might be nice to have 2 1/2" extra for a change!

I'll probably go with one of the Cabela's units.

Thanks Hawg.

Grym:

I bought this holster for my 5.5" Pietta 1858 when I ordered it from Cabelas.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...0006180211074a

Got mine in brown, & then cut it down & sewn it up to better fit the way I wanted it to, "it's a back woods work holster to me not a fancy dress one."

That's a nice holster Hawg. Didn't see one at Cabela's, so I'll probably go with the one Raider linked. I might even try my hand a leather work and see if I can cut it down to match the barrel length, like Raider did.

Hey raider 2000, thats a nice remmy, hmm it looks like
mine, but your bore is a tad shorter, mines
in 36 cal, whats yours?. my 36 frame is the same size
as my 44 remmy, even the 44 cylinder fits the 36?.
And get this the 36 has a shorter bore than the 44,
but the 36 weighs more than the 44 in overall gun weight,
go figger that one.

The barrel and cylinder have smaller holes, more steel = more weight.

OK i think i allready had that one suss out
What i was meaning was, you would think that the
44 with been a bigger bore gun would weigh more
but who am i to say. You can pack that 36 to the hilt with
powder and the recoil is low, all in all its a very hefty gun.

That's my new 5.5" barreled Pietta 1858 New Army in .44 caliber, so far my new favorite.
At just 2.5Lbs & packed with 30gr. FFFG Goex & a .457 Ball she packs a good punch at 815fps. 212ft. lbs. & she'll hit POA at 25 yards with just a 1.5" left group pretty consistently "as long as I do my part."

You dont say what sorta camp you are going to. If you are going to carry a '58 Remmy, you should do it justice with an appropriate design for that gun and time period. Modern cheap holsters with brass snaps is a convolution of terms.

http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(t3h...D=6&styleID=20

Go here: There are 4 pages of holsters and a number of them are decent patterns for your '58. You are likely looking at a military type holster, or you will be looking at a frontier/western holster which could be a slim jim or mexican loop design. The Lawrence type holsters did not begin to show up until WWI or after, the top straps and brass snaps being an Elmer Keith design of the 1930's. The quick draw holsters were strictly Hollyweird in the '40's and '50's.

Rattenbury in his book Packing Iron shows the holsters of the percussion days as being top flap military style or slim jim style. The slim jim could be with or without the mexican loop depending on how far west or south you wish to portray. Also, for you information, most of the revolver holsters of the frontier era were either made in El Paso, Texas, or Pueblo or Denver Colorado.

Camp is on a river in the N. CA Sierra. Me, my brother, one or two friends and a few of our collective kids. Fly fishing, shooting, motorcycle/ATV riding, eating and nights around the campfire with a cigar and a scotch.

My absolute favorite thing I do every year.

I pack mostly because I can and it's fun, but also not a bad idea when in the woods. In the past I've brought semi-autos and DA revolvers, but this year I want to bring a SA revolver. Might load it with 45s or maybe even BP, but either way, I think it will be more fun.

As usual here... ask and ye shall receive. You folks have given me lots of options. Thanks!

I checked out trackofthewolf and see that for a lot of their holsters, they don't list the 1858 Remington as a fit.

I like these, but they don't say they fit my gun:
HOLSTER-DL-5

HOLTER-SL-5

The have a web form contact, but they want to much info for my taste.

I don't think you want either of those. The Cheyenne is for Colt and clones. I have a set of Cheyenne double loop holsters for my 73's and my Remmy drops in to the curve in the grip. The bottom holster is for Colt and 75 Remmies which is a little different configuration. If it fits a Colt it's not going to fit a 58. IMHO a 58 Remington screams to live in a Slim Jim.

Most new holsters for this era arent going to fit perfectly. They require some fitting. That is done by wetting the holster then fitting the gun to it. The wet leather will stretch and mould to the particular gun.

Cabelas has some pretty close copies of proper holsters.

Chatter on other forums mentions that they had good results with the slim jims from several sources after wetting and forming the '58 Remington guns to them.

I make my own holsters. They are all wet formed. I spray the gun well with WD40, wrap it in saran wrap, then push it in the wet holster. I then put the wet holster with gun in it in a dry towel and put the whole thing in a Food Saver bag and vacuum it down tight. I leave it over night, and take it out in the morning and remove the towel which has pulled excess water from the leather. Leave the gun in and let the leather dry and you should have a perfectly custom fit holster with little effort.

The point of TOW is that they have several pages of good pictures to give you some ideas. David Ripplinger there is very knowledgeable if you give him a call.

Yeah, but no mention of the '58.

Will fit Colt SAA, Colt clones, Ruger Vaquero, S&W patterned Schofield and Remington 1875 revolvers.

Just get one of these and live with the extra inches. http://www.carricoleather.com/oldwestleather.html Or these. http://www.riverjunction.com/catalog...rstandard.html Or have a custom maker make you one.
