what to consider

I am retired and have a few pistols. None are really special. I am not going to start carrying and I shoot only for recreation. I also am not the guy who takes down and cleans his gun every time he shoots it. So, here is my question: I want to purchase a really nice pistol. I am a fan of good workmanship, good engineering, and tradition. What would you recommend--not to exceed $2,000

Having a bit of a hard time understanding why you wouldn't consider cleaning a good pistol each time it's used... But that's not your question.

If I had up $2000 and wanted a well built, solid, nice lookin gun I'd look at some of the Dan Wesson 1911s.

What I meant is that I don't really enjoy cleaning the guns like some folks do. I keep them clean.

1911 like mentioned is certainly a great and popular choice. My money though would go to a nice single action revolver, Uberti, Ruger, Magnum Research etc. If I wanted an auto and I had your budget to work with I would be looking at a Beretta M9A3 or a Beretta Cheetah in a nickel finish.

I'd look into a smith or colt in 357. Can shoot the cheaper 38's if wanted

I would consider the Beretta/Wilson Combat 92G Tactical or the Smith and Wesson Perfomance Center Stainless Steel 1911, both are sweet guns.

I like the Single Action Colt idea. Great guns.

If an auto and a $2k budget, I'd look for a Sig 220 Sport. It's like a high end 1911 but works out of the box...
