need help from quickload
I'm working up a load for my .338 Lapua and i can't find real good data for my combination.*
Can someone with quickload please run some numbers for me ?* 26" barrel 1/10 twist IMI brass, CCI 250 primers, IMR4350 powder, Hornady 285gr HPBT match bullets, and Sierra 300gr match kings.

Why do you wish to load heavy bullets with such a fast burning powder?

that's the powder that Sierra and Berger list as the most accurate and that's the only powder I could find.
I have data for the Sierras but nothing good for the Hornadys and i don't want to blow up my rifle.

The answer you seek is 75 gr and 74.4 gr max.
But that is with the 60.9 kpsi registered pressure that is silly wimpy for the 338L case head design capable of 75 kpsi, and should have been registered at 65kpsi. And that is with IMR4350 which most batches I have seen are slower than the QL library thinks it is. So if you want to play it by the book, take those numbers and reduce by 10% and work up to those numbers. Or you could grow a pair. Or you could buy QL. It is cheap compared to 338L brass

Thanks Clark it's on my list of things to buy.
Are you sure about those numbers? The Sierra manual lists 72.9 - 78.2 for the 300gr SMK and usually you can go higher with a lighter bullet so the 285gr should be close to 80gr

just because those components are most accurate in there test guns does not mean they will always be most accurate in every gun.i would try a 250 gr. practical hunting load first and if accuracy is a problem then try for a match load.
hunting loads can have match grade accuracy.6.5mm will shoot out to 1000 and 30's will shoot to 1200,so a match grade .338 lapua is something that would hit a coffee cup at 1500 meters(1640 yards) here is a load recomended for accuracy 300 grain HPBT OAL 3.680 86 grains of N170 ( reduce by 6% and work up 1 grain at a time) norma brass and federal 215M primers 2,700 fps with 26" bbl Last edited by green_MTman; July 8, 2014 at 10:23 AM. |

Ok I loaded up a bunch of ammo and did a pressure test and checked muzzle velocity. It went good no pressure problems but my actual velocities were well below what the Sierra manual posted, maybe because they're using Lapua brass
I'm not real happy with the case fill with IMR4350 probably about 85% but it seems to work just fine 300 SMK HPBT 1. 74gr 2463 fps 2. 74.8gr 2477 fps manual lists 2550fps 3. 75.2gr 2496 fps 4. 75.7gr 2530 fps 5. 76.1gr 2531 fps 6. 76.5gr 2532 fps manual lists 2600fps 7. 76.9gr 2549 fps 8. 77.4gr 2558 fps 9. 77.8gr 2581 fps 10. 78.2gr 2585 fps. Manual lists 2650fps 11. 78.5gr 2597 fps 285gr Hornady BTHP 1. 75.4gr 2577 fps 2. 75.8gr 2578 fps 3. 76.2gr 2581 fps 4. 76.6gr 2585 fps 5. 77 gr 2606 fps 6. 77.4 gr 2612 fps 7. 77.8 gr 2642 fps 8. 78.2 gr 2651 fps 9. 78.6 gr 2670 fps 10. 79 gr 2692 fps 11. 79.4 gr 2696 fps Factory TTX 250gr ammo for reference 1. 2787 fps 2. 2762 fps 3. 2774 fps
