Shipping question-round balls

I am stuck here in Temple Ttexas, with no local access to .454 round balls.

It appears I will have to order on line and I wonder do the vendors charge extra for a box of balls. tTey have standard shipping costs factors , but also mention that they may charge extra for a weight factor.

Does any one have any recent experieince with on line shipping of round balls.

??? how much does a box of balls weigh

ps.........I have spent 20+ years in retail shipping and looking at some of the on-line shipping costs , I truly believe the vendors are making a little more profit on shipping.

pps.I also notice the pricing difference in on-line vendors for the same .454 balls.

Tom, bpstuffllc uses USPS flatrate boxes to ship their round balls. If you're only ordering 100, shipping is high; but ordering 1000 lowers the price of 100 balls significantly.

Yes I can appreciate the economy of scale. Playing with their calculator, they charge $11.00 for shipping 1 box and $11.00 for shipping 10 boxes

Being a first time occassional shooter, I will just have to bite the bullet so to speak. So far I have found three vendors with about the same total charge for one box.

Insist on flat rate boxes. You can put up to 70 lbs of stuff into one of those boxes and it'll still be the same rate. It's the best bargain at the USPS.

Just a little over 2 pounds for a box of 100 .454 balls. Each individual .454 ball weighs about 140.6 grains.

I would agree with the idea of getting your own mold and casting them yourself. It's MUCH cheaper in the long run. However, before I started casting I had really good experiences ordering my black-powder supplies from Track of the Wolf (www.trackofthewolf.com). I couldn't say specifically if it cost extra to ship roundballs, because I always bought multiple items at a time, but the shipping was always reasonable (within $10-12) for everything I ordered at once.

I really enjoy casting my own bullets.

1) If you are careful you can get better consistency casting your own than buying precast bullets.

2) It is cheaper if you shoot a lot.

3) It gives you something to do on rainy days.

4) You gain a closer association with your addiction.

If you do, think safety. Lead can be hard on your body. Molten lead is somewhat hot.

I am ordering 600 for $28.00 and he is charging me $5.00 for shipping and he seems to have a good reputation. Plus he also sells minies and conicals.

for me, the best deal i have found is www.grafs.com when it comes to powder and hornady .454 rb.

standard policy is $4 handling and $0 shipping regardless of quantity.. also, they're the only place that offers real blackpowder in small 5lb minimums.. things can sell out quickly so check frequently.

Powder, Inc. also sells 5 lb lots, although they're slightly more expensive than Graf's for Goex; Graf's costs $104.90 (delivered, incl. PHS&T and hazmat) for 5 lbs and Powder, Inc. costs $106.75 (also delivered, incl. PHS&T and hazmat) for 5 lbs.
