284 Winchester
I need to put together 200 rounds of .284 Winchester ammo for a Model 88 Winchester. I'll be using Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tips. I have IMR 4350, IMR 4831, & Hodgdn SC 4831. If it were a bolt gun I wouldn't be asking but since I've never loaded for an 88 give me some advice. Thanks & God Bless........Creeker

I had one years ago and it was a pretty solid gun but it sounds as if this one is pretty new to you. my nosler manual shows H-4831 52.0 to 56.0 max and IMR 4350 45.5 to 49.5 max. I would stick to mid power loads until have time to work up loads to higher velocity/power. Velocity is close for both powders with no mention of imr4831.

You know Gundog Nosler's max load is less than IMR's starting load. I know the 150 grain bullets each source use are different but there's sure a lot of difference between the two.

The 150 NBT is mighty long for that short neck. You'll find the 154 Hornady just as accurate and half the cost. With your powder choices, IMR4350 would be the right one. My 280 has about the same capacity and loves RL-19 and 140s.

Yeh, it drives me crazy to. I have seven different manuals and try to stick to the one who makes the bullet, but when I can't find the powder I want to use i'll look in other manuals and have never had issues from pressure. Makes you wonder why such a wide veration in powder charges. My guess has always been that some are just more conservitive then others.

The cases were long after sizing so to the trimmer we go.

LAH,
I have nothing to add to this. I just wanted to say, cool gun you have. I have one in 308 [yawn] that I really love. I have a web snapshot of wisenersinc.com model 88/100 information they used to have published. It gives a lot of information on these models but unfortunately most of the pictures are missing. They used to make replacement magazines on the original winchester tooling but I don't see them on their current website. |

If the powder maker is listing generic no-brand-name-mentioned data for a given bullet weight in a specific calibre, they are constrained to listing a load safe for all the brands they tested of that weight, which might handicap some projectiles more than others. If they are listing specific data for specific bullets from a specific manufacturer which are significantly lower than the manufacturer's loads, I honestly have no idea. Perhaps their test rifle or their pressure gun really is that sensitive? |

Where's the target? And how about a picture of the rifle while you're at it?

My only knock on the 88 is the action is about as loooong as short action gets. For hands on carry in brush it gets a little nose heavy pretty quick and winds up on the shoulder just before bambi surprises you. The long path between the click of the trigger and the pin hitting the primer hurts offhand shooting. Some 88's are ok, or not, but very few are great offhand

Sweet. Not the pressed acorns and oak leaf and not 308. I would say that's a keeper

Yes it locks just like a bolt action with it's rotating lug. This I understand even though it's not my rifle & I've never owned one. The 284 I was referring to as a bolt gun was this:

After much thought I decided to load these with 51.5 grains of the IMR 4350.
No chance of a double charge. HEE HEE |
