First, thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts and words. It is truly appreciated.

Thanks for the offers for help, but we're in good shape in all respects thanks to a fantastic support staff including Rich, Mad Dog, Rob, Louis Awerbuck their ladies, and many others. My wife Chris has propped me up when necessary and vice versa. Our daugher Ashleigh and son Flint have been rocks for us.

Don't get me wrong as I neither need or want a pat on the back for getting my grandson Austin out of the house alive. However, I would like to point out that my former training and the fire drills we conducted as a family paid huge dividends here. Let this be a reminder to us all that the old adage, "we train like we fight, and we fight like we train" goes way beyond the use of firearms.

And for enquiring minds, no, there will not be a "fire sale."

Wow, Denny, this is absolutely horrible news! I'm so glad you got out what you could. Really sad about the dogs. It's amazing how a fire can get going and go so far so fast. Also amazing how well you're handling all this. Any idea on how it all started? If there is anything i can do, let me know. My prayers go out for you and yours. God Bless.

Nancy and I left yesterday. Rob and Evie a bit earlier.

What I've seen:
In the long run, it'll all be fine. Denny seems to have hit a home run with State Farm and they've been absolutely proactive. Cudos to the agent and company.

On the personal side, Denny, Chris and Ashley have been truly upbeat and gracious with all offers of help. They allowed us to provision a new computer and cobble together an industry, SWAT author and SWAT advertiser contact database. Rob did the rental house hunting and cell phone battles.

In the short run? They've all been so busy being good hosts to us that I'm not certain they've really had time to deal with the loss. As we all move off to our daily lives and this becomes "yesterday's news", they're certain to face some dark hours alone.....I know I would.

But...it's one damn, fine, strong family. It'll only be stronger once the loss is dealt with. It'll take some time....lots probably; and friends....good ones mostly.

For the rest of us....sympathy, pride in all the Hansen's and helplessness at not being able to "just make it better". That's what life gives us; and dealing with it is what makes us who we are.

Just a suggestion for an issue of SWAT:

We here talk all day and night about what tactics we would (hopefully) use when meeting up with a BG, or an intruder, or an act of terrorism. We talk about the tools that we would use, the combonations(sp) and such.

Yet, we tend to forget about other drills or tactics for other dangers. Something that Denny said really struck out to me:

I am most grateful that Denny and his family are still here with us, I really enjoy reading his Briefing Room notes.

I know that he knows that he and his family aren't alone with their loss and that we all will always be with them, either in person if able or in spirit if not.

Trust me, you're not alone in that, brother. When I first heard about what happened to Denny and family, it was as shocking as if it had happened to a family member. In fact, it did. I think we all feel like a family here, especially in bad times. To be perfectly honest, when I was telling my wife about what had happened, I ... well, instead let me give you her reaction. She said, "that is very sad. I know they've lost many memories. Hey, looks like your lachrymal glands are acting up a little. Want me to take a look at that?"

I am very glad to hear everything is working out ok. It's hard to say "for the best", because it isn't, but at least they are working out. I wish we could do more - or at least something.

I was also struck by what Denny said about practicing fire drills.

This week my kids had their first fire drill, and they had it because I was reminded how serious this kind of thing can be by Denny. I'm ashamed to admit that my oldest (4) didn't even know to crawl under smoke. Hopefully we can all learn from this.

I just drove through Denny's neck of the woods a couple hours ago. Stopped at J&G and picked up 5000 rounds of .308, 1920 rounds of '06 in M1 clips, and 1500 rounds of .22.
Needless to say, I thought of Denny as I was passing though. I hope everything is coming back together for you.

Glad your Ok, my condolences on the losses, especially mans best friends, I lost mine a few months ago, he got ran over by a vehicle while chasing a possum. And you lost alot more than i did, it would be hard for me to cope, the good thing is you have a great family and great friends. I know it hurts real bad, just hang tuff and god bless.

Events like this really help put things in perspective, don't they? You had a bad day at the office? Someone cut you off during your commute? Your cell battery went dead just as you were closing a deal? Annoying, yes, but in the grand scheme of things hardly worth getting upset about.
