silencer question... probably asked before, but not seeing it...

Is there a decibal rating that defines a silencer ???

I have a local machinist that could build me compensators that could scrub "some" sound from my rifles...

I'm not looking for total silence... but I'd like to tame some of my hunting rifles to a level that could prevent hearing loss from shooting them without hearing protection... some of the handguns would be cool as well,but my question stems around the hunting rifles... I also realize I won't get rid of any super sonic "crack" just looking to scub enough noise off to save the ears...

is there a definable decibal reduction in the rules ???

if one went & got the tax stamp, can you get as many siliencers as you want / could afford, or are there limits ???

there are probably rules saying you can't hunt with a silencer ( concern about poaching...

spelling ) ??? but if one could quiet up the gun enough to save the ears, yet still be allowed to hunt with the weapon, I'd outfit all my hunting rifles, & probably a couple target rifles as well...

Any device designed or intended to reduce the report of a firearm is a silencer, whether it works or not. If your goal is ANY reduction in sound, or if there is ANY reduction in sound, it's a silencer and must be registered.

so in theory, even screwing on 6" of addition barrel tube would be considered a silencer, since it would ever so slightly reduce the muzzle blast

Mag, I think the 6 inch extension is splitting hairs since it was added to increase range/velocity/energy/accuracy... But I could be wrong as I once thought if you made it from a shampoo bottle it wasn't a silencer... glad I got that out of the way before any one official informed me...

The rule is 1db of sound reduction = silencer.

One stamp = one silencer.

Barrel extensions are not silencers but a barrel extension surrounded by baffles would certainly be a silencer.

anyone have a quick & easy explaination on what it takes to get a siliencer then for one or two of my "louder" target rifles ???

I think I remember reading in the MN laws that they ( silencers ) were not allowed for hunting use... does anyone live where they can / do use a silencer for hunting ???

Nope - Federal regs state differently...

The way it's worded, even if it doesn't work or makes the report louder but was INTENDED to reduce the report, it's a silencer.

You, my friend need to get a Lavang compensator from D.P.M.S. It sends the sound forward and slows muzzle jump. Brownells sells them. I love mine.
