USN 1973 to 1980. The closest thing to a carrying a weapon was the Bullpup missile out on the wing of a P3-C.
Today any N frame S&W so long is it has holes that fit 44 special.

Oops - I forgot to mention my preferred pistols in my previous post. For open (or barely concealed) carry I like my Ruger SR9c. For IWB I like my Ruger LC9, and for deep concealed carry I use my Ruger LCP.

Vet's favorite pistol
I am conflicted. Used a 1911 while on AD in '65-'69, and was impressed with its absolute reliability. However, that was modified by the San Diego Marksmanship Unit gunsmiths, and was accurized w. adjustable sights, trigger job, etc. Still, was superb with ball ammo. If I could get one now, would be my favorite - but I can't get one. Next time on AD was in late '70s through early '80s; times were tough then and if you wanted to qualify annually you even had to buy your own ammo (be prepared?). So today, my favorite is a S&W 686+. Durable, accurate, reliable.

I'm not too much of a pistol guy, but I find 1911's to be the most enjoyable to shoot.

Iraq veteran here and 9mm has a special place in my heart. I prefer any pistol that I can shoot well. Own a couple modern plastic types that are great for carry but I am more accurate, by far, with my RIA 9mm 1911 officer.

Active duty 1975-78, and still love the ol' 1911. My issued 1911 was manufactured by the Singer Sewing Machine Co. And said so on the slide.

US ARMY 76-80. Engineers.
Was never issued a pistol but we did have weapons familiarization in BCT. My first time firing a 1911 & I was hooked. Bought my first one 14 years later (a Norinco) & I still carry it today. Part of my EDC rotation of 2 1911's & a G21. |

My Colt 1911. Shot one when I was 16 and loved it. Shot the M9 in the Corps and hated it. My Colt and my Glock 23 are my two carry guns. I tend to tinker with my 1911 a bit so when I'm trying a new part I switch to the Glock.

Gunnery Sergeant
USMC (ret) As much as I enjoy shooting a 1911, I carry an HK45c most of the time. I also carry a Sig P229 .40 from time to time.

well in general I believe the ones they trained with list high on the mark so you're bound to see a lot of nods for the 1911 and M9. I was kindof partial to the M11 myself but I hated the M9.
my favorite for the last several years has remained the springfield XDM however, I like the ergos, dead reliable, and they are pretty darned accurate. Naby-2008-2012.

I don't mind the M9 but my hands are a little small for my thumb to reach the safety. I am not a big 1911 fan. They are a pain to field strip and I don't like the grip safety. I prefer a Glock(not a compact) or a good .357 4-6" barreled revolver

USMC Infantry '03-'07... I don't hate the M9 (Beretta 92) as some report. I grew up with rifle and shotguns, knew how to shot pretty well before the Corps, but I had never shot a pistol other than sporadically until then. I learned to really shoot a pistol on the M9, so it holds a special place in my heart.
With that being said, I love a 1911. Don't currently have one (certainly have had several), but it's on my list of things to re-acquire. I have a Jericho 941 (basically a souped up CZ75) that I like, a Kahr CW9 that I carry (kind of like, good pistol just not my cup of tea other than it's comfy to carry), and a Sig P227 and P290 that are issued and carried at work. If I had to rank my favorites... 1911, Beretta M9, Sig P220 (or 227), CZ75... my Kahr has never so much as FTF after several thousand rounds so I have to give it some love. It's reliable, accurate, easy to carry... just not my favorite platform. Then, of course, I love Ruger revolvers. Have a 6" security six circa 1976ish. I want a Super Redhawk in .44. |

Similar to whiskey...USMC '96-'01. Grew up shooting a little, not a lot. Rarely handguns.
I learned pistol marksmanship in the Corps, and was issued a beat up old M9. I grew to hate it. Maybe it's because it had 7,000,000,000 rounds or so through it (exaggeration), but the damn thing was a jam-o-matic, sir-breaks-alot. I qualified with it and carried it, but I prayed I never needed it, 'cause I didn't trust it. Thank god I had my Maw Duece, timed a touch on the slow side! Fast forward a few years. I have a 1911, and I love it. I also have an XDs .45 that I carry. Guns I wish I had: a Belgian Hi-Power and a G23 or M&P. Wish I still had...a Browning Buckmark. Someday a .357 wheel gun will find a home with me, also.

U.S. Army 1968 -1970. Republic of South Vietnam 1969-1970.
Carried a Colt .45 in addition to the M16. First gun I bought out of the service was a Colt .45. I carry a .45 as my EDC. Have many different guns and calibers in my collection but will not be found without a .45 in my possession. BTW, that EDC gun is a Kimber Stainless Steel Pro Carry. Have been carrying it for about 30 years.

I can only relay what my WWII father would say, pistols are really handy for making them duck while you were going for a rifle. Although later in life he did buy a couple .357 revolvers.

U.S. Army 1976-1980.
I'll take an M1911A1 over any other, any time.
