W571 in 45ACP works for me
I thought I was out of suitable powders for .45ACP, but found an old metal can of W571, an gave it a try. I think I bought this stuff to try in 44mag with no joy, and then put it away for several years. Well, with .45-185 cast SWCs, the stuff works great! I have been using Hodgdon Clays for most 45acp loads, but may switch to 571. Speed is higher, pressure seems lower, and groups are tighter. I tried the new load at 50 yards, and dang if most of my shots werent in a 2-3" group. That is real good for me with the limited style 1911. I never heard anyone mention 571 in .45acp, and had no idea it would work so well. What else is this stuff good for??

Obsolescence. Winchester discontinued 571 some years ago. However, Hodgdon (which is now making all of winchester's powders, by the way) does have HS-7, which is the same as the old Winchester 571. BUT! Joy of joys, HS-7 has been, according to Hodgdon's website, DISCONTINUED as well.

Just looked it up on their site, here is what it said so if you like it you better pick it up before it's gone.

HS7 is used to load some pistol cartridges including .357 mag.,.41 mag.,.44 mag., and .45 Win. Mag. HS-7 is identical to Winchester's discontinued 571. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. |

Gee Mike, I didn't think Hodgdon made anything, except Pyrodex.
They get their "spherical" powders from St Marks Powder in Florida, a subsidiary of General Dynamics which makes Winchester Ball powder by the Olin process and sells some to Hodgdon for relabeling. Their only handle on Winchester is that they are the US distributor. Just like they are the US distributor for IMR powder but don't own the factory in Canada. Or the one in Australia where they get extruded and flake powder. |

Gee Jim, What the *$(*&$)7 ever.
Salient information remains: 571 discontinued. HS-7 the same thing as 571. Moot point, because HS-7 has been discontinued. Where they get, excuse me, GOT it isn't really important.
