new gun

Hello again. If you were to buy a new inexpensive bolt rifle in 308 or 7x57mm, what would you get? There is a confusing array of choices on the market and I walk away bewildered and head scratching. Just this week WalMart advertises Remington 770 for 297 bucks, a Savage 11 Trophy Hunter XP for 497 dollars, and I know that they have the Ruger American down there, I think for a little under 400. They also advertise Mossberg ATR Deer Thug for $347 and Remington 783 for $387. I'm not thrilled with the new synthetic stocks and such, BUT, I don't have the bucks to buy a better rifle with wood stock. ANYONE?

Remington 770 doesn't have a great reputation. It was designed more by bean counters than by engineers. Mossberg ATR isn't much better. Of the other two that you mentioned, I'd take the Savage but the Ruger is also well built.

As to stock, you might want to rethink synthetic. They are much more durable in the field than wood.

For caliber - definately .308 unless you reload. 7x57 is a great caliber but ammo availabilty will never rival .308.

I know of no 7x57 rifles (NIB) out there that are "cheap". They are made in M70 Winchester form for about 9 Benjamins and I know of few others out there now. The .308 (30/06), however, is another story. For that chambering I'd want either a Marlin bolt rifle or a Ruger American in the low priced arena. Both will run you somewhere around 3-4 Benjamins and if you spend at least 2-7x32 Nikon Prostaff $$ on a scope, you will be a very happy camper.

Nikon Prostaff, Leupold VX1, Burris FFII, Bushnell Elite for scopes to consider.

Thanks

OK, thanks for the opinions. So this weekend I will check out the Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter XP, the Ruger American, and the Remington 783. All in 308 if I can. WalMart offers Layaway from this Monday until the 23rd of December. Should be enough time for me to get it paid off. Sorry to be poor. Perley

I have a Ruger American in 308. It's a nice gun and pretty accurate. The adjustable trigger is nice. I like mine....

If cost is a factor, I would avoid the 770 and buy the Ruger All American.
If quality and resale value is important: Ruger Hawkeye or Rem 700.

Will Do

OK, and thanks to all. I have read that the Ruger American is a good rifle. I also read that these guns (cheapies) all leave something to be desired, mainly because at the end of assembly, they can't afford to fine tune them. I did look over an American last winter, and I discovered that the magazine did not slide in and out like the more expensive guns. BUT, that's why the expensive guns are expensive, because they DO fine tune them before letting them out.
Based on the previous comments I have given up on the 770 and the Mossberg. But the comments regarding the 783 seemed to be favorable (sort of) and also for the Savage. With similar comments about the American. WalMart's price for the Ruger American is $379.00, so that is probably what I'll get. And in the 308. I've never really been a fan of the 30-06, although I've never owned one. But I've shot some quite a lot and don't care for the muzzle blast and the kick. And I don't really need the range of that caliber. Up where I live, long shots are not the norm.
And thank you all so much for taking the time and trouble to share your views on this subject. Regards, Perley

You may have to order it from online, but that Mossberg ATR 308 is available with a nice walnut stock (real walnut, not walnut stained hardwood). Last time I was on the Buds Gun Shop website, they were in stock and around $312 shipped. Buds also has a layaway plan that I have used before without issue. In regards to the poor comments about the Mossberg, I've read plenty of positive reviews about them. Just about every gun out there is going to have negative reviews. A lot of the complaints about the Mossberg were geared towards the earlier version without their new trigger and towards the crappy plastic stock on both new and old versions. Go handle one and make your own decision.

Edit: Just checked and still in stock at $324 shipped

I'd love to know where people are finding these Remi 700 for under 400 bucks. I've heard at least a dozen people on TFL quote $400 prices.

Well I basically lived at gun shows for about 15 years as a dealer and I've yet to see a new 700 go for $400. The best I've seen was about $450 and that was years ago. Right now they're going for around $700 here and that's a smokin deal compared to 6-8 months ago.

An ADL at Walmart is going for about $599( on sale! )

Ruger Americans are going for about $325. It's getting pretty hard to argue with rifles like the American when you can get one and a $300 scope for the same money as a 700.

Personally, I would stay away from the 783 until its been out a little longer. I've got a couple of older "cheaper" Remingtons (788's 1 .308 and 1 .243). Understand that these lower end models do not have a much for aftermarket support in case you want to modify and customize. Now with that being said, I'm gonna throw another model out there to look at, Savage Axis. My dad has one in 30-06 and likes it more than his 70's era 700 BDL mainly because its much lighter. Its actually a really good minute of deer rifle. I can't knock the Ruger American, actually thinking about getting one for myself.

The biggest downside of the Savage Axis is that it does not have a recoil lug. That really kills your ability to do much in the way of stock customizing or accurizing. For a cheap Savage, I'd much rather get the Stevens 200. That is the same action as a Savage 110 (long-proven quality action) set into a pretty plain-Jane composite stock.
