Hi Cap 45acp
Since eight is not enough and nothing less than 45acp will do (sarcasm), I have been considering the possibility of a high capacity 45acp pistol. I know of the Glock 21 and the Springfield 45 Tactical. Are there others? I looked at the G21, but the grip was prohibitively large for me. Are there any with smaller grips? I realize that a double stack 45 will have a very large grip, but I am hoping to find one that I can actually grip. The G21 will not work for me. I believe I saw a Rock Island 1911, but don't remember how the grip felt. I don't really want another 1911 anyway. I have not found a SA 45 Tactical to check out yet, but will look for one. Any suggestions?

You might want to check out the CZ 97, or wait until Sig comes out with the P227 which I think will arrive next year.
I've had my eye on the CZ for awhile, it's on my short list. |

The HK 45 is a pleasure to grip and IMO not as thick as the others but only has 10 mag capacity. Still a terrific .45 and my favorite after the single stack SIG P220. The M&P .45 is another one worth checking out but again only 10 mag capactity.

Which Glock 21 did you try? I could never get into the 3rd gen Glocks... even the SF... but the Gen 4 Glock 21 feels perfect to me. I love it.
Other than that, the XD 45 has a pretty comfortable grip. XDM 45 is worth checking out. The FN 45 is a great option as well... The Gen4 Glock 21 is definitely my choice though... and I say that having bought and sold an original Gen3 and a Gen 3 SF Glock 21... I've had the Gen 4 for a year now and have a couple thousand rounds through it. Absolutely great gun... soft shooting too.

I had a 21sf. Now I thought the small backstrap on the IV essentially made it a SF. Are there other differences to the grip I'm not aware of?

I was looking into this a while back too and I keep looking at the FN 45, 15 rounds is fairly impressive and I understand it does not feel all that thick for a double stack, although I have yet to shoot one.

Well, depending on your timeframe, SIG Sauer is introducing a new double-stack .45 (P227, IIRC) that will HOPEFULLY debut in the next year.
Other than that, I'd echo the others... XD45, G21 (Gen 4), HK... |

My vote is the FN45... It has everything you want but a excellent trigger. It has very good trigger just not excellent but IMHO just as good as the HK which cost about 50% more.

I am not necessarily in a big hurry. Of the ones mentioned the FN45, XD45 Tactical, and the CZ 97 look most interesting. The 15 rounds in the FN really appeals to me, I think. I will take my time and look at anything interesting and shoot if possible. Also the M&P 45 looks interesting. The HK may be a bit on the high end of my budget, but if I see one and it grabs me I may grab it back. I may get a chance to see the new Sig 227 before I buy. Like I said, I am not in a hurry. I have bought too many guns without enough research. I'll take my time. I think.

Try the Glock 21 Gen4. The grip is a 1000% better than the old 21. If you want a 3rd Gen model 21 look into the SF version.

With your criteria, XDm .45 in your choice of barrel length, FNP .45, or M&P 45 with 14 round optional mag.
Large frame glocks have never fit me. Get above .40, and it's not for me.

My vote is for the XD45. Very good grip comparable in size to a 1911. I have the 4" Service model with thumb safety. Excellent gun with very good accuracy. 13 + 1 capacity.

I have to echo others who have reccomended the Springfield XDM 45. I recently bought a XDM 3.8 and the grip is very good for the rounds it carries. Slim enough and contoured well so its size is nice and evened out.

I have an FNP45 and I think it's a great gun. 500+ rounds without issue. Smooth shooting, low recoil and more accurate than I will ever be.
FNP45 has been replaced with the we FNX45, but they are very similar. |

the springfield XDM45 has a much smaller grip than the glock 21 and also has replaceable backstraps to make it even smaller. I have medium to large hands and use the medium backstraps with my XDM45s but I would wager that the small backstraps would serve you quite well. you may also check out and see if the FN Herstal FNS is offered in 45ACP as well, they are very nice guns with good grips.

Not sure what your intended use is, but from carry size to competition models STI is a recognized leader in hi-cap 1911 pistols and enjoys a great reputation for quality and customer service. They also offer most of their pistols in a range of calibers from 9mm to 45 acp. I own a number of their single stack and hi-cap models and am an unabashed fan of the Texas gunmaker.

If I needed a high-cap .45, I would get one of the FN choices. I have an HK45 however, because I am happy with 10

I have no personal experience but since they have not been mentioned yet, Taurus makes a couple of different ones

Yes FN makes a great hi-cap .45 with 15+1!
That said I went with the XDM 5.25.

I will add another vote fore the XD. I have the Duty model with the thumb safety, and small hands. I find it much more comfortable to shoot than my 1911.
