Probably just my 396 Smith. I have 2400, unique, bullseye, bluedot, titegroup...titeshot...tite something, sorta the same burning rate as bullseye, but Sportsman's Warehouse has all kinds of powder for me to buy. Any help would be appreciated.

Gecko, I have never found a load from M.D.'s website that I was interested in trying. I think we are on parallel but opposite worlds or something. I am currently loading 5.5 grains of titegroup (went downstairs and looked at the container) under a lazercast 180gr. LFP.

Well I used to use 13.5 grains of Blue Dot with that 180 XTP bullet in mt 296 as it got right at 1100fps with a huge flash.

Thanks Gordo, the 396 weighs 18 oz. and pretty much hurts to shoot, but thats OK cause I only put a cylinder or two thru it on the range. Is 13.5gr. of bluedot a saami pressure type load?

Salvadore, if you're looking for cowboy type loads, I would suggest using TrailBoss.

With the Lasercast 180gr LRNFP, start with 4.5gr, working up to a maximum of 6.6gr in .2gr increments. Find the load your pistol shoots the best with (data from Hodgdens, using 185gr LRNFP).

TrailBoss is a really good powder, very hard to double charge (if that's a concern - and it should be), and has a very mild recoil.

Titegroup is another powder that can be loaded for this bullet. Start with 4gr and work up to 5.5gr. Caution - it is very easy to double (or even triple) charge with this powder. It is also a very mild recoiling powder (same Hodgdon data as above).

While there are good loads for the other powders you listed, I suspect that you will like TrailBoss and TiteGroup, until you get used to the recoil.

The Blue Dot charge of 13.5 Was on Alliant's load data but this is a max load and should be worked up to, the data was for a 180gr JHC the XTP's are are sized to .430". Alliant is in the process of redoing there load data. I would start at 12.5gr and work up.
This is from a Hornady manual with a 3" CA Bulldog as the test weapon,
180gr XTP/HP WLP
Bullseye, 5.0-5.6
W-231, 6.2-6.8
Unique, 6.1-6.6
2400, 11.2-11.8
I would use W-231/HP-38 for the 180 XTP , I load 6.2gr of W-231 for the 200gr XTP/HP for a S&W 696 and 6.5gr of W-231 with a Nosler 200gr JHP for the same gun.

No antipitas, I was actually looking for a load that would push the 180 xtp hp hornady fast enough to expand reliably in my 3" barreled 396 Smith. Appreciate the input tho.

jibjab, I will go to the alliant site and check it out. Thanks once again.

salvadore,
How does the 180gr shoot for you as in a point of aim and point of impact relationship in your 396 ?

It has that V rear with a fiber optic front and with the cast 180s it shoots to the point of aim. My data for the load shows slightly over 1000fps, dont know what length or type they got their velocity from.

no: "Controllable accuracy"

Hornady says that bullet will expand at impact velocities as low as 750fps; most highly recommend developing a controllably accurate load providing a minimum launch velocity (measured, please) of 850fps.

Suggest testing: 11.5g 2400; 6.5g Unique. Firm crimp, standard primer, sized case, OAL to cannelure (about 1.500").
This is Hornady data from a 3" Charter Arms.

(oddly enough, currently working with another for the 44 Special; decision made to test 240g swaged HP launching at 750fps. also might test heavier choice --255g, 270g, 280g-- as penetration is virtually assured with these heavies)
