I found 'em....What are they?
During my latest brass scrounging adventure at the local range I found these 4 cases. They have a .50 AE headstamp and are necked down to the same size as a .44 mag. Anybody know what they are called? Maybe somebody's latest wildcat? They are flanked by a .44 mag and a .45 ACP for scale. Now that I have'em I'm gonna have to go buy dies, bullets and a gun to use 'em in, SIGH

440 Corbon. A 240gr JHP at 1800fps
From Corbons Website: "The 440 CorBon Magnum combines the excellent ballistic coefficient of the 44 caliber bullets with the case capacity of the 50AE. This marriage produces a hyper-velocity cartridge with advantages of both parents. The bottleneck design is a super idea that produces a hunting round capable of very flat trajectory and amazing down range power. This concept works well in single shot pistols or the hefty autopistols. Imagine if you will a semi-automatic handgun with an eight round magazine and the power of over 1700 ft/lbs of energy. This is serious firepower in any situation! The combination of gun weight and higher velocity tames the expected recoil admirably. It's much more pleasant to shoot that you would think" |

That .440 Corbon looks like it would be a better hunting rig than a defensive pistol. Looks like there could be a problem of over penetration if the bullet was quickly introduced to a scumball. In the case of hunting, it looks like it'd be a killer deer round.

It's not what they're carrying that concerns me, it's those camo'd kevlar vests that they're wearing.

...None of that bothers me....Here in Colorado, they all learned to read a while back...I know that because the DOW told me they keep getting requests for the little season schedules from strange addresses and I never see any deer or elk during hunting season...OR...they stand right behind the sign that says "Warning" Trespassers and Hunters will be Eaten....

440 Corbon performance
Hey guys,
I have a Desert Eagle with a 440 Cor-bon barrel (in addition to 50AE). Over-penetration is definitely a concern with the 440C as it is a "hot" load and has the fastest muzzle velocity of any round I have seen. We took a few bowling pins to the range one weekend and it was obvious. Most rounds (9mm, 40S&W) would only nick or scratch the pins, the 50AE would penetrate but not punch through, and the 440C would split the pins into peices. I use the 440C at the range because it has more accuracy than the 50AE, and would definitely use it as a hunting round. There is a great comparison between the two rounds here: http://zvis.com/dep/aevscorb.shtml Don Pezet [email protected] |

The Limbaugh round? What is that the one you eventually can't even hear?

Ethier the recoil or the front sight bouncing off of your forehead would tell you when it went off ! The flash burns that you got from a two inch barrell might also be a good indicator... |

.440 CORBON vs .50AE
Is a magazine or bolt exchange required to swap between these two rounds?

I wouldn't expect anything would have to be changed but the barrel and recoil spring(s). It should be similar to a .400c-b conversion on a .45acp or a .357sig conversion on a .40s&w.

Although I dont have a 440c. I do have a Bain&Davis that I really enjoy. It penetrates well and shoots quite a bit flatter than the 357. Bain&Davis is a 44mag case necked down to 357.
