Reloading .405 Win for model 1895

I have been thinking of getting a Winchester model 1895 in cal. 405. I would probably go for the modern made-in-Japan version rather than an old Winchester. I would do some reloading for it. My question is: Can the box magazine of the model 1895 handle the length of bullets that are heavier (and probably longer) than the standard Hornady 300 grain commercial loads? There are not very many choices available, but I see that Woodleigh makes a 400 grain bullet with .411 diameter, and there may be others.

Yes it can. Have loaded 435gr bullets for mine. Sweet spot though is the 325gr.

The Japchesters are really fine guns, probably better than the originals. But nothing is sweeter than a Win 1895 carbine chambered for .30-40 Krag, gun will handle much more, but that is the sweet spot for me. But, if you are using it for ALL types of game, the 405 can take on anything that walks this earth.

Hi Old Time Hunter: Are you talking about cast bullets, or are there jacketed bullets available in the weights you mentioned? If so, what are they?

A bud of mine has one of those modern 405 Winchesters and claims it has a wicked recoil.

I would suggest trying one before buying one.
