I ordered 50/70 bullets from Old West Scroungers. They say smokeless. The company( OWS) says that the rounds are LESS pressure then Blackpowder???? Another company I contacted claims Blackpowder is Less pressure????????? The gun looks very good. But I dont want to shoot the wrong bullets in it and damage it. What do you guys and gals shoot out of your springfield 50/70 trapdoors? And what company do you get ammo from. The ones I have say 50/70 goverment 450 grain lead bullet j and j products xl-20b starline brass

Cartridges of the World
CoW gives the 50-70 1113ft/sec with a 450gr bullet. If in doubt load 50gr of BP(carbine load) and see how it shoots.

In general most smokless loads at 50-70 speed are less pressure but I am not a 50-70 trap expert as all the ones I have had where rolling blocks. I had a lot of old made in the 20s used brass and every one loaded with BP popped the head of but would take 46 grains of 3031 till you jammed 65 grains of FF in them then instant head seperation. Kind of amazing what rock blasting powder AKA FF black can do.

Who makes the bullets? Ask them.

I bought the brass, dies, press, etc. to load my own so I know exactly what's going into the rifle. It's costly at first ( the brass and the dies are pricey). I cast my own bullets. Track of the Wolf is a good place to buy.
Also, there's a poster on several sites named Strawhat, who is, as far as I''m concerned, one of the most knowledgeable and helpful 50-70 shooters around. Check out this thread: http://blackpowdersmoke.com/oldcoots...hp?topic=175.0 |
