How many rounds in the first month?

On average, how many rounds would you say you put through a new handgun in the first month you've owned it?
I've had my Sig SP2022(in 9mm) for just under 30 days and when talking to some classmates about shooting, they brought up that 300 rounds in that short of a time is kind of a lot. I've cleaned and re-lubed it after every 50 rounds, so I'm not worried.

I clean/lube after each shooting session, but I don't do it after a given number.

I've gotten in the habit of using my ultrasonic cleaner to clean the barrel & RSA now so relubing is more important now.

Do you do the slide too. I was wondering about that as it is impossible to get all the grime after shooting some through with a rag!

I'll have to give it a try.

What can you not put in the ultrasonic cleaner?

Oh, and I only put a hundred or so. Just a hobby so takes a while for me to break in a new gun because my range and available time are respectively long and short.

I like to go for 500 to 1000 first time out. Let it cool and try with carry ammo.

If it's something that I will be carrying, no less than 100 during the first range session. Some call it break-in, I call it a shake down. Whatever you call it I want to be as sure as possible that it functions. After the first 100, I'll fire a box (usually 20 rounds as it is now sold) of a few different candidates for CCW use. If all work, I chose my favorite, and run another couple boxes through it. Again, just to make sure.

If it's a "range toy" I'll probably go through around 100 rounds during my first range session. All guns are cleaned, and lubricated after every trip to the range.
CCW firearms are wiped down, and inspected at least monthly. They also get some range time with every trip. Not every one, every time, but anything I carry will get a regular run through.

300 per month is no big thing...

what kinda 'Classmates' are these?

I shoot atleast 300 rounds per trip unless something goes wrong.

You'll spend tens of thousands of dollars on factory ammo before you get close to wearing out a gun...

What you think after a couple hundred it would be junk?

Thinking much the same thing myself. 300 rounds is about 2 range trips for me, a 2 week allotment.

Sounds like the 'classmates' aren't shooters. Some people seem to think guns wear out after a couple hundred rounds or something, which just shows how little they know about them.

Up to a thousand. I go to the range 2-4 times a week and shoot 50 rounds per trip, mostly because ammo is expensive.

300 rounds may be the minimum to break a gun in.

I'm probably not a good example for you since I don't get much range time. I tend to shoot 100-150 rounds per range trip, max of 200 if I take two guns.

So in theory if I had a new gun and made two range trips in the first month, I might shoot your 300 round count. Doesn't seem excessive to me.

1000-1200. If it will be a carry gun I like to run it through a few pistol classes. The last glock 17 I bought made it through 2 range trips, a dynamic handgun class (indoor), and a tactical handgun class (outdoor) without a cleaning. 900 rounds in 4 days.

First handgun I bought was the Walther P99QA .40, put 5 boxes of 100 down range the first day. Hand was a lil worn out afterwards. Man .40 was so much cheaper 6 years ago

I shoot 400 rounds a month minimum with guns I consider broken in. In a month where I get a new gun that number could go up to 600-800 rds that month. In one weekend with my new P30 I put 500 rounds through it. That's just two days.

There's no accessory as valuable as trigger time.

I have 450 in my first week. I put 200 of quality ammo on the first trip for break in, and then 250 of random ammo on the 2nd trip. Definitely cleaned thouroughly after both trips.

As a note, how often you clean your gun is completely up to you. But personally I think every 50 rounds is a bit excessive. When I get home I take a rag and wipe down the internals, namely the slide, frame, and barrel, paying special attention to the breech face, feed ramp, and under the extractor as they get the most dirty. I re-lube and call it a day. I don't worry about cleaning the inside of the barrel for a good 300 rounds or so. But I only shoot FMJ and it doesn't get too dirty. As always, YMMV.

I go to the range about twice a month and shoot an average of 150-200 rounds per session thru my XD45. I field strip and clean after each session. Found that some basic household tools assit is getting the grime and deposits out of all the nooks and cranies....a toothbrush and pipe cleaners. Spray the slide and components down with Hopps and get to work. Might want to give them a try.

I take three or four guns when I go to the range and shoot between 50 - 200 rounds with each. I'd be more worried about wearing a high power rifle barrel out than a handgun.

Lol, we're in class to become aircraft mechanics(well, FAA certified aircraft technicians)
One of them loves guns but doesn't get to shoot often between work and class(5hours a day, monday through friday) and the other is just a random mook who likes guns and thinks he's king *bleep*
Lol, I know I'll be able to put at least 10,000 rounds down range without having to consider how much time my gun has left, the conversation in class just got me wondering about other people.

Cleaning after every 50 was more cleaning after every range trip since I was only shooting 50 rounds per trip until my last one.

My pistols have seen close to 500 rounds in the first month. My Remington 700 .308 saw 250. 300 rounds for a pistol is nothing.

500 rounds through my 22 in one range trip is not unheard of... but its usually about 300-400. (though my 10/22 will see 500 rounds easy)

My other pistols see about 100-200 per trip. If I take both my 9mm and 40, about 100 each, if only one, 200 rounds on average.

For a new pistol, I ensure its lubed well before first firing, and after about 100rds, I give it a quick wipe down inside and out, then re-lube. I do this for the the first 300-400 rounds, as that is when parts are wear fitting.

It depends on the gun. Small pocket pistols might only see 50 rounds a week until I'm satified with them. DAO pistols and revolvers only 100 to 150 rounds a week. Semi-auto SA or SA/DA pistols get a lot more. Those get 300 to 500 rounds a week. Some pistols are just more fun to shoot than others are. .22 semi-auto pistols normally get 500 rounds a week by me. After break in and having fun with a new pistol is over I may reduce the amount I will shoot them by half on future trips to the range. Sometimes that new factor takes more than a month to get over.

For a carry gun I put 3-400 rounds through it on the first range session. I generally do not clean it during this period. I usually have CLP with me and guess I would spray liberally if it was dry or having problems.

My personal break-in with a new handgun is:

- field strip, clean, light lubrication
- get 250 through. If I get any failures, I'm more forgiving the earlier they occur
- another 150 or more. If I have any failures after 250 rounds*, I won't trust my life to the weapon. Minimum expectation is 150 consecutive flawless rounds from 250-400.

I put > 600 through my PPQ and SR9c in the first month with each.

*failures attributed to the handgun, as opposed to something that is clearly ammunition related.
