IMR 4895 Question
I've had very good accuracy from my 8mm Mauser and .270 Winchester using IMR 4895. I use 43.5 grs. in both rifles, pushing a 220 gr. Sierra in the Mauser and a 130 gr. pill in the .270.
I'd like to work up a Mauser load that would offer better bullet expansion on whitetails than the 220 gr. bullets. I think 150 gr. Sierra Pro-Hunters in front of 46.7 grs. of IMR 4895 might do the trick. I'm a newbie here, but I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. |

Try the hornady SST in 150gr, I have had so great results using them.

IMR's data is showing a MAX load of IMR4895 at 36gr in the 8MM Mauser with a 150gr bullet.
You would be 10.7gr over max with the load you are suggesting. If you do try this load, make sure your life insurance policy is current, and make sure there is no suicide clause in there, because that is probably what they will claim if you try this load. Your life can improve. There are people out there that care about you. You don't need to do this. Please call this number, 1-800-273-TALK. They want to help. Good luck, and God bless. |

Disreguard that last post of mine. The data on the website is incorrect. My Lyman manual is showing a max load of 49.2gr IMR4895 with a 150gr bullet.

I was just going to point out something along those lines. Thanks! Speer recommends a max load of 48.0 of IMR 4895 for their 150 gr. bullets. Sierra has a never-exceed load of 50.5 grains IMR 4895 for their 150 gr SPTs. The load I'm looking at should chrono about 2560 fps. That should take down a deer very nicely, don't you think?

Speer data can be on the warm side with certain powders, so be sure to start low and work up carefully. The last 8mm ammo I loaded was new WW brass with the Speer 150 and 54.0 of H414. It shot great out of the gew 98 we were using. CB.

+2 on the 270.
4895 powder is the cat's pajamas for 8mm, but a tad too fast for 270. My best results with 270 have been with a 4350, take your pick of makers. I use Accurate XMR4350. Your shoulder will thank you, as 270 kicks me a lot less than 8mm, and gets the job done. LT |

I just loaded my first rounds with IMR 4895 for 8mm Mauser. Whats wierd is that the starting load according to Lee's load data that came with the dies is only 29.5 gr. for a 170 gr bullet. I bought some Hornady round nosed 170s today and loaded to these specs. It seems like BARELY any powder is in there! I weighed each load to make sure it was 29.5. The chart says to never exceed 33.5 grains for a 170 gr bullet. Why is this so much less than your 43 grains! I know you are pushing a heavier bullet, but thats a HUGE gap! What gives with my data?!

My favorite 270 powder is H4831SC. Shoots the same as 4831, but has a shorter cut, and meters a bit better.
