I would like to change the standard sight on my 98 to aperture. I want a quality sight with micrometer markings to allow for precise adjustments in the field. It should be adjustable for both elevation and windage. It should also be durable. Durability, weight, and cost are the primary reasons for not choosing a scope.
Where should I start looking? Andrew |

Brownell's sells the Lyman Model 48 sight. It's an old time favorite and allows for elevation & windage. It'll cost you about $65 for the sight and you'll have to have a gunsmith drill and tap your receiver for you.

Will I need to modify the front sight? If so what would be a good choice?

At Brownells I couldn't find the Lyman model 48. They have other lyman apertures but not the 48 as far as I could tell.

Take a look at Ashley's sights, they are quite interesting.
You can download their catalog at http://www.ashleyoutdoors.com but you need Acrobat reader to browse thru it (it's in PDF format). You will still have to have a smith drill & tap your receiver. |

Alex, Lyman no longer lists the 48 in their catalogue. I guess they stopped making it. I, and Brownells, sell their #57 sight with target knobs. That sight has 1/4 minute, audible adjustments. George

Sorry about that Alex.
I was shooting from the hip and I knew Brownells has a Lyman rear aperture sight for the Mauser. I forgot that the 48 (my favorite for general use) has been out of production for years (so now I'm dating myself). Regarding the front sight, don't change it yet. Try the 57 first and if you shoot well, leave it be.
Personally, for front sights I prefer the globe type sight; but that's for target use and isn't rugged enough for field use. You may want to figure out what applications you'll have for the Mauser and take it from there regarding the front sight. |
