Facebook & Blackpowder guns

I have been running an ad on some of the local facebook trader groups
Wanting to buy traditional black powder guns.

And they have been coming out of the woodwork.

Since some states have started allowing ANY high power rifle during what used to be muzzle loader season, the .35 caliber and up cartridge guns are going cheap.

And the front stuffers are going even cheaper..

What can you get?
Well, I “rescued” a 1851 .36 caliber asm kit pistol that has not been finished.
In trade for 200 rounds of .22 ammo.
This was before i started the defarb and restoring process.

For $60, I got an EIG made Schneider & Glassick .36 caliber
I took it to a local scrap yard, they electrically tested the frame, it is made from bronze, not brass..
Got it, a flask, some caps, balls and conicals.

For $100 (the most I have spent yet) I bought a Pietta 1862 5.5 inch fluted 1862.
It was Unfired when I got it. (I remedied that soon enough)

I traded 50 rounds of .45LC ammo I loaded over 25 years ago for the ugly girl that kisses good.

Yesterday I traded 2 555 round bricks of federal bulk .22 ammo ($23.97 each at walmart)
For a Pietta .44 caliber 1860 army.
With balls, flask, and 6 extra nipples.

Here are a few more photos.

1860, 1861, and 1862

This doesn’t even go into the long guns.

So, Looking for smoke poles?
Run an ad on your local facebook trader pages, they will line up at your inbox..

Have fun.
45 Bravo.

Somehow . . . I think that if I were to do a trade with you, you'd end up with the cow, I'd end up with a hand full of beans and I'd have to change my name to "Jack".

Congrats on your great finds! It just goes to show that you might have to scratch a little but you can come up with some nice finds! You did well and I'm sure you are enjoying shooting them! Thanks for the post . . . inspiring!

Thanks for the info. I am very new to FB, having resisted it for years. Moved to a new town, joined to keep up with old friends. I had no idea such things existed. As luck would have it, there is a gun/ammo related trade group in my area.

Edited to add: Nice horse tradin' there, BTW.

Thats cool Brazos, I have turned down some deals because of the condition, or it being a camo inline (I hate camo or painted guns of any type, but that is another soap box to stand on.)

When you start pointing out the flaws, and problems, normally their price starts dropping.

I have also turned down $50-$60 guns because of being inlines and the fast twist, and I really like shooting patched round balls.

I SHOULD have walked away from the one i call the ugly girl (Agnes)
But because of the price and steel frame, i decided i could always pull parts from my brass frame .36 1851 and stick on the '51 barrel if the '61 was trashed.
But i got it anyway, after a lot of work getting the barrel off.
After shooting it, I am glad i did..

The downside of buying used muzzleloaders?

Of all the ones i see, or handle, 3 out of 5 are still loaded with ball & powder.
And the owner doesn't remember what it was loaded with.
(I would never fire a muzzle loader that I did not personally load, or watch being loaded)

So that means pulling the nipple, soaking the breach in water to deactivate the powder, then inserting a grease fitting into the nipple hole, then I use a grease gun to start the ball moving then a ball puller to get it out the rest of the way.

If they have been loaded a long time the ball can be rusted/stuck pretty good, and the grease gun gets it moving up the bore.

Happy Trading

P.S.
Oh, for some of the ones interested, on facebook search for trader groups, using key words like gun trader, or firearms, or the name of your local county, or city and trader, and don't be afraid to ask on the groups if anyone knows of another trader group in the area.

Downside, on regular firearms their prices are sometimes outrageous.
(Saw a guy asking $200 for a rg10 .22 revolver)
or sometimes asking $75 for ammo they paid $9.99 for

I don't sell on there, but i do buy
