38 super loads

Does anyone have a good source for 38 super loads?

Looking for hot loads (MPF out of W231 if possible)

All the data I have is for standard 38, 130 @ ~1150 fps

I tried working up loads using WSF but was not pleased with the results.

Please e-mail direct.

Please include specifics about launch platform, on-hand components, tooling, and goal.

handloads.org is pretty limited for the 38 super - 130 grain bullets

A big part of my problem with this is getting my hands on powder, with obama mania going on its hard enough just keeping primer's on hand let alone a variety of powder.

I managed to get my hands on 231, after trying for several months. I worked up some pretty rippin loads with WSF but was not pleased with the accuracy - on any of the WSF loads.

I've shot my buddies major power factor loads with 130 grain fmj and those are the loads I want, however they discontinued that powder, I don't remember what kind it was.

Look over here as well...

http://www.38super.net/

Powders are available and can be ordered online or through your local gunatorium.

WESHOOT can probably give you a few suggestions and there are handloding sections of several of the forums. Likely though if you gave more info folks could help a bit more.

not sure what else you need in terms of info, 38 super 1911 platform (ramped barrell) full size 1911 using 130 grain bullets want to get the ballistics up to major power factor using W231 powder, if that is possible with this powder.

potenial vs safe

One might reach 'Major' using W231, but I'm not sure for how long.....

Better powder choices for your 130g FMJ might include:

Vihtavuori 3N37, 3N38, N350, and N105

Hodgdon HS6

Alliant Power Pistol and Blue Dot

Accurate AA7 and 9

To name a few.....(I'd start with 3N37).
If powder cost is an issue I'd select AA7.

yea powder availability is the issue, I would like to use AA7 but powder is like gold or diamonds right now, along with powder etc, at least here in DFW. I don't want to pay the fee's with ordering powder on line but it looks like I may have no choice.

Any from my 'list'?

I've seen blue dot

I've hit all the big places, cabelas, bass pro, a few gun shops between my place of work and home, everywhere its the same story.

I have a few powders on order with a few shops, but I've been waiting a - LONG - time.

Sierra.....

BASED ON SPECIFIC BULLET, GUN, and COMPONENTS, Blue Dot can safely make Major using 130g bullets.

Whose bullets are you using? Sierra? Win.? Dia. (size) of those bullets? Primers? Is the gun a GM? Commander? alloy framed? 5" barrel? STI, Colt, Kimber, etc.?

Information like this is useful to begin a conversation on reloading for the Super.

If you said that you were trying to make major with a Llama in .38 Super or a Detonics with a 3" barrel the answers you are likely to get will be different than if you say you have a Series 70 Colt GM or a P14 45 from Para Ord. As folks here don't know what you have it's useful info to provide for a discussion. Older Colt barrels for the Super often did not provide good accuracy. The same is true for the bullets and the components.

Ordering online is sometimes both cheaper and is usually faster than buying off a shelf. The money and time you spent driving around looking for powders offsets the cost of shipping. The cost of ship[ping is often less than the storekeeps mark up.

SS Kimber 5" barrell

.356 diameter bullets

Was using winchester bullets, all I have left now is some rainer plated, haven't used any of them yet, going to just load standard loads with them.

Primers are small pistol winchester, I do have some small magnum pistol as well that did make an improvement with some of the WSF powder loads, but plan on using regular small pistol.
